It's far from certain that Mannus will start for Rovers. ;) It's a big step up from what he is used to so it'll be interesting to see if he can break into the team.

He will start for them if fit. O'Neill tried to ship Murphy out during the window and has dropped him twice.

For the record neither Brian Murphy is easily the best in this league, but he's not at the level he was last year

Wouldn't be a good move for him. He's close to the Ireland squad as it is so no point in ruining his chances by sitting on the bench at Ipswich.

If he is to be good enough for international level then surely he must be able to become 1st choice at Ipswich

No, Richard Wright is better than him. Ipswich players' and fans' player of the year last season so there's basically no chance of him being signed as first choice.

Fair enough Richard Wright is a decent keeper but I dont think he's top class.I dont know if Murphy is better than him but if he is to be a regular in the Ireland squad ahead of Westwood in the pecking order then in my opinion Murphy needs to prove to be better than the likes of Wright

I agree, but he's not going to get much of a chance to do that if he's sitting on the bench.;)

Then again, that might be a bonus in the manager's eyes...;)

He can just tell Keano he was trying to copy him and be a box to box type player :)

"Roy Keane has always been a manager known for rotating his players, and throwing the odd surprise selection into his starting lineup, but I've got to say, this is something new for me. I don't think I've ever seen a player signed as a goalkeeper make his debut as a central midfielder in a playoff final at Wembley stadium. Will Keane's gamble pay off? Only time will tell."

He could just go up for a corner and do the damage - less obvious than having to play midfield for 90 mins - no?

Admittedly the thread has gone off at a pretty surreal tangent(!), but considering we're speculating about what a keeper might do to nobble his rival on the training ground, you might like to reconsider the above suggestion?

I mean to say, even Roy Keane's dog might see through that one...;)

I thought teams practiced their set pieces on the training ground?

I dont know, fail to prepare, prepare to fail...........

Dunny is correct with four. All of them were in friendlies and I'm not sure if he actually completed 90 minutes in any of them.
To be honest, his getting capped is as much a tribute to his positive attitude and "stickability" as his ability (imo).
For when Roy Carroll got fed-up being back-up to Maik Taylor and started acting the maggot, Sanchez and Worthington looked at a number of other keepers, none of whom really shone.
Meanwhile, Mannus hung in there, always ready to answer the call, even if it was only to warm the bench.
At present, it looks to be a toss-up between Mannus and Jonathan Tuffey (22 year old at Partick Thistle) as to who is back-up these days. My suspicion is that Mannus may be relegated to 3rd choice, as Tuffey gains more experience, since he (Tuffey) does look to be a prospect?

That said, I'd guess Mannus will do a good job for Shams, since he has the basics and certainly looks to take his football career very seriously.

EG - What happened with Roy Carroll and NI? In what way did he act up?

In addition, must you refer to Shamrock Rovers as "Shams"????

Its not their nickname and the only place I've seen them referred to as that is in The Sun!!!

Even though Sanchez gave him every chance (eg rotating him with the much superior Maik Taylor), Carroll still threw his toys from the pram when required to sit on the bench. Eventually, he said he'd rather not be considered if he wasn't going to start.
This is in keeping with an unprofessional attitude towards his career generally, which has seen him go from 100 games for MU just a few years ago, to playing for Derby Co. Reserves at Alfreton Town last night (attendance 871).
Indeed, it is thought that if Nigel Clough could get someone to take Carroll off his hands, he'd do so, even though their 3rd choice keeper is a certain Saul Deeney...

Don't read The Sun and wasn't aware there was any problem with a simple abbreviation. (I would call them "SRFC", only Sligo fans would object).

Thanks for the info on Carroll

No real problem with the abbreviation and I take it that you don't mean any offence by it, its just that I never saw it used until the Sun started it (btw, just to clarify I buy the Sun on Saturdays for their betting section!)- its just that they were never known as "shams". Abbreviated we'd use "rovers" or "the hoops". Now I know there are manyteams that could be intepreted as "rovers" or even "hoops" for that matter, however the same apllies to Utd, City etc, and I've often seen Man U referred to as Utd, and Man City as "City"

And despite it being Bohs nickname was quite relevant to Rovers given their long term nomadic existence up until this year.

And punched a Dundalk player after the whistle.

He squared up to him and "headbutted" him. No punch. Dundalk player made a meal of it. Still disgraceful behaviour, he ran half the pitch to get involved in every scuffle. Roy Keane should knock some sense into him.

Might be irrelevant if Keane is bringing him to Ipswich but suggestions in Wolverhampton are that Big Mick is having Murphy and Deegan watched.

Watched by who, the government? Thats some gamesmanship there. Make players paranoid, I like it. Or maybe he just wants them to THINK they are being watched.

hopefully the three minutes McCarthys men saw of Deegan last night will be enough to convince them to pay us handsomely for his services... :o

Deegan will be an Irish cap within 1-2 years if he goes to Wolves ahead of Ipswich.

I don't see a thread on him in the list so creating this one.

Kieran Westwood has pulled out with his back injury and Brian Murphy of Bohs has been called up as his replacement. Well deserved for Murph on the back of his 2nd LOI title and a nice boost for the league before he goes to England.

Id be worried about that lads in a big game like this. Pray to god nothing happens given.

Cue the LOI fans throwing the toys out of the pram there, but I dont think it needs to be explained.

Much as I rate him as a better keeper then Joe Murphy I'd imagine that Joe will be No. 2 as he was already in the squad.

I'd imagine Joe Murphy would be ahead of Brian. Brian's a good keeper, but not international standard so hopefully we dont need to use him. Made quite a few big mistakes this year, and didn't live up to his fantastic form of last season when he was more deserving of a call up.

I'd actually agree with that although he came good again at the end of the season. Maybe not quite a few mistakes but certainly more then last year.

Paddy Kenny must be sick, you'd imagine he'd have been in line for a recall had he not been banned.
