Absolutely, this is the LOI ffs. There are very few spin doctors about instructing club employees what to say, and what not to say. Without question what happened was a journo rang Pat and asked him for a quote. He didn't contact bohs looking for something official. You're reading far too much into it IMO
Absolutely the clubs should be held responsible for the actions and words of their managers, but lets not try and make out that this is some huge conspiracy. Dramaqueen ********ology...
Let me get this straight, Dodge. Are you seriously suggesting that in the League of Ireland managers speak to the media in a personal capacity?
(Maybe footballers also play in a personal capacity? :))
I think that the Bohemian FC statement is clear and unambiguous, and is forthright in its opposition to racial abuse; Pat Fenlons comments are not.
In the Indo article he does not appear to even condemn racial abuse, and distances himself from being able to do anything about it
It's disappointing. It's disappointing that players are abused every week but what can you do? That's the way it is. Like I said, we've dealt with it as a club, as a unit in here. We'll move on."

Yes, absolutely. Do you think they check everything with the club?

Thats an interesting spin on managers being autonomous!
Its a pure nonsense - Pat Fenlon was being interviewed as manager of Bohemians, and was speaking as the manager.

My point was that he wasn't speaking as PRO of Bohemians, and his individual statements were clearly different from those of the club's official statements.

Agreed!
The fact still remains that Pat Fenlons utterances, as manager of Bohemians, were woefully inadequate, and a poor reflection on himself and his club

Wow - Dodge we seem to agree on loads of things!
1) Pat Fenlon is manager of Bohemians
2) He should keep his mouth closed if he cannot make sensible statements to the media

Hold on a sec... why is there no 6 page thread on this: http://www.argus.ie/news/anger-as-flag-deemed-racist-1709851.html
'Darren Mansaram was the victim of racist abuse against Drogheda and there was also some racist abuse chanted his way by Sligo fans...'
That's the Dundalk FC secretary Kevin Holland quoted in a local newspaper, yet when Bohs are involved in something it's lock em up and throw away the key time!
I'd also like to point at the thread regarding rovers racist chanting towards Joey Ndo.

Maybe because Mansaram getting abuse from fans is different to a player getting abuse from a fellow player? Maybe not from a moral POV but certainly from a practical POV

Whats your point?
Do you object to this major story being discussed by posters here?
Do you have a persecution complex, or do you think this is a conspiracy (by the referee/ FAI / foot.ie posters)to tarnish the reputation of Bohemians FC??

i think its abundantly clear what his (very valid) point is and the fact that you are avoiding offering an opinion on the other, similar issues he has raised speaks volumes about your motives.

Well the thread involving ndo was started by a Bohs fan, so he/she obviously felt strongly about it. If you felt strongly about the Manseram thing, why didn't you start a thread on it?

My motive was simply to understand what point he was trying to make!
To my knowledge, this is the first occasion where a player is facing a disciplinary action by the league as a result of racial abuse - and irrespective of what club is involved, invitably attracts comment and discussion.
To moan that "yet when Bohs are involved in something it's lock em up and throw away the key time" smacks of xenophobia. At least other posters on the Bohemians forum have been more measured in their condemnation of the player
Personally, I am opposed to and disgusted by all forms of racism in sport and in society generally.

This whole thread should be closed at this stage.
Mcguinness makes stupid a mistake. He apologises to the player who is willing to leave it at that.
He is then punished by manager and club and he will no doubt receive another ban for FAI which should end this matter.

More Fenlon Gems
"It's disappointing. It's disappointing that players are abused every week but what can you do? That's the way it is"
This is a weak and inadequate from Pat Fenlon - it's not disappointing it's simply unacceptable and Fenlon should say so!
"What we've done at this club before is that any problems we have in the dressing room are dealt with in the dressing room," said Fenlon.
Thats fair enough if the problem is in the dressing room - but this was on the pitch.
Would it be cyncial of me to think that Fenlon / Bohemians reactions are motivated by trying to avoid a ban, rather then a genuine recognition that racial abuse should not be tolerated.
agree Me myself I think he should get a year ban. this is not good for the league in any sort of way

Read an interview with Clarence Seedorf in World Soccer once which was pretty much spot on with regards to racism in football.
Still, you'll always find enough people looking for a direction in which to wring their hands, furrow their brows and have a good long tut......
You know, it's like a conversation I had once with Bald Student which was also pretty much spot on with regards to racism in football. I'm not going to say what it involved, because that would be a useful comment other people might be able to discuss and agree with or argue against.

Real Madrid centre back goes on the rampage last week & gets a 10 match ban.
Bohs player makes one stupid comment in the heat of the moment. He later apologies yet you think he deserves a one year ban.

Apology from McGuinness:
By Daniel McDonnell
Friday May 01 2009
JASON McGUINNESS released a public apology yesterday ahead of his return to football tonight following the storm created by the racist comment he made towards Sligo (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Sligo+GAA)'s Romauld Boco.
The Bohemians defender was fined and suspended by his club for the incident and still faces a lengthy sanction from the FAI (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Football+Association+of+Ireland), but the Dubliner is in the frame for the meeting with Dundalk at Dalymount Park (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Dalymount+Park).
"I wish to confirm that I was involved in an incident," said McGuinness (http://www.independent.ie/topics/JASON+McGUINNESS). "It is correct to say that I did use an unacceptable phrase during the course of the match. I sincerely regret making the comment and I have made an apology to Romauld, which I'm delighted to say he has accepted.
"I am aware that what I said was inexcusable, but by way of explanation I would point out that it was made in the heat of a hard-fought encounter and was a one-off occurrence.
"The incident has reinforced to me the importance of the 'Show Racism the Red Card' campaign and I am very anxious to get involved in this initiative to help stamp out all forms of racism in football and society.
"I hope people will accept this was completely out of character and that it has never happened before. I can confirm unequivocally that it will never happen again."
Meanwhile, Pat Fenlon (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Pat+Fenlon) expects a difficult challenge from a Dundalk (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Dundalk+%28County+Louth%29) side buoyed by their surprise success in Derry (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Derry+%28County+Derry%29) last week.
Tonight, Lilywhites boss Sean Connor (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Sean+Connor) and a host of ex-Gypsies return to Dalymount Park, with Fenlon having a rough idea what to expect after the opening day clash between the teams which he admits his side were fortunate to win.
"Their better results have been away from home maybe," said Fenlon. "We've had them watched and obviously we'll have a game plan when we play them, I don't want to go too much into that. We'll be prepared for whatever they do. They went to the Brandywell last week and had to defend for periods and won the game, so they are capable of doing it."

dont think he had any other option. althought i do agree this is a storm in a drinking vessel, any longterm ban would be inapproiate and would only serve to punish his dependents. a stretch helping out on ethnic diversaty projects would better a better option. then we can all go back to hating the real enemy them white ba@~#tds in abbotstown .... only joking

"Right or wrong" - are you seriously unsure about the morality of racial abuse?
I think that you are giving him too much credit for his 'manliness' in making a public statement.
If, as his been reported, the ref included his observations of racial abuse in his report, there is little anyone in his position could do other then this.
Of course he might be genuinely contrite, but the sceptic in me leaves me wondering.....

Thought Fenlon was a classier man than to have him back in the team already, his apology counts for very little in the circumstances as far as getting out of a punishment. Its good that he is apologising but he should still be punished just as heavily. And Bohs have shown their stance on racism by deciding that he only deserved to be suspended for the 1 game, I'd have thought he'd be dropped until the FAI decided his punishment.

5 match ban.
"The Independent Disciplinary Committee today found that Mr. Jason McGuinness subjected Mr. Romauld Boco to racial abuse during the match between Sligo Rovers and Bohemian FC on April 18th, 2009 and has imposed a 5 match suspension in accordance with FAI rules 73 and 89. The sanction is effective from May 20th, 2009."
