Alice in Chains? Thought they were finished after their lead singer's death... no idea they had a new album in the pipeline, this'll be interesting.

The new Franz Ferdinand album, Tonight:, out at the end of the month, supposed to be surprisingly good, a real departure from the last one. Bit of electronic danciness, some dub reggae, African drums... Sounds good! :D
Didn't know Massive Attack had a new one due but am also now very much looking forward to that!

These are 2 albums that were actually released last year, but I reckon will be big in 2009 on this side of the pond.
Nikelback - Dark Horse
Lady Gaga - The Fame

merriweather post pavillion - animal collective. insanely touted as album of the year already according to pitchfork but it wouldn't surprise me, i love the AC i dooo.
stann that forthcoming franz ferdinand album sounds as if they might've been listening to these boys' records. spin mag says: "Call it searching for the perfect peak. Merriweather plays like the summation of a long, strange trip, combining the group's career touchstones: harmonic Beach Boys pop, African tribal chants, minimalism, minimal techno, psychedelia, and dub."
i dunno, music with conventional guitars/verses/choruses bores the hell out of me mostly, i might pick up more spoken word stuff like robert ashley or the sound-art strangeness of william burroughs. but that's already released, not exactly 2009 :D:cool:

The Manics - Journal For Plague Lovers (Working Title)
Doves
Yeah Yeah Yeah's
The Strokes, The Arctic Monkeys and My Bloody Valentine have all gone into the studio or are in the process of doing so in the next while.
Remains to be seen if the sessions result in an album for 2009.
I'd particularly hold my breath on the MBV record! :D

Ooh, sounds kind of intriguing too. Without fear of correction I can say I've never heard one iota about them before, but I'll be keeping an ear out from now. :)

We have a winner already for the Album Of The Year 2019!

Yeah only heard it recently myself. They toured with Velvet Revolver in 2007 with former "Comes With The Fall"( I never heard of them) frontman William DuVall as lead singer and have been in the studio since last september. Don't sound too bad see below

Hearing a lot of good things about White Lies, not least that they're comparable to Manics 1994 classic 'The Holy Bible'. I hope they're not a let-down. i'll most certainly give it a few listens.

Used to be a big fan of his late 70's & early 80's stuff when I was a cub. Getting back into his music in last couple of years, loved "The Seeger Sessions" also rediscovered "Nebraska" classic albums

I got the White lies album today. The more i play it,it keeps getting better and better.
I don't see the comparison with the manics "the holy bible" tho.
I saw White Lies playing support to Glasvegas a few weeks ago and i was very impressed with their live set.

Some critic in The Fly mag over here, compared the album to it. That really got my hopes up. On first impressions, it's really good...

Morrissey - Years Of RefusalCan't wait for this myself

I've managed to get an early copy of the album. There's nothing different on it that's not already on any other Morrissey album.
Its vintage Morrissey, in other words (brilliant!)

Neither did I until I read it on the previous page. ;)
They are going to re-release all of their back catalogue as 10th anniversary special editions starting with Ten (obviously).

Placebo are releasing a new album this year...
I am now looking forward to The Duckworth-Lewis Method, after reading about it in the Times last night. The Divine comedy's Neil Hannon and Pugwash’s Thomas Walsh are teaming up to release an album about cricket this summer.
The yet to be titled album already has tracks such as Gentlemen and Players, The Sweet Spot, Jiggery Pokery, and The Age of Revolution.
It's being released to coincide with the Ashes series.
How could this not disappoint this summer?

Just as I see you there Noby, did you get the new Pelle Carlberg album, came out at the tail end of last year I think?
--------
Meanwhile I'm eagerly anticipating the new Mylo album, hoping, after a five-year wait, it can be the second best album ever! ;) :p
One of the tracks was given to Annie Mac and played last weekend, YouTube link for ye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AWPz2rN5qc). Apologies for yer wan's retarded voice ruining it though. Must say, outside of that annoyance, I like it so far, kinda French feel of the start of it, before a beautiful midsection. Overall, heightens expectation and excitement. :)
--------
Lastly, does anyone know of a good aggregator for impending release dates? and maybe current ones would be handy too...

Not yet - which isn't unusual for me. I'm not the 'queue up outside HMV' type of guy. I'll pick it up eventually.
Actually there are several new releases on Labrador that look tempting - I might go on a splurge for my birthday.
Someone did send me a link of impending releases before, but I can't think of it now. Play.com does have a coming soon section, with dates.
The new ...Trail of dead album is great, beats some of the rubbish that's been released since 'Source Tags...'
Not new releases, but I just bought the entire murder city devils back catalougue, re-released on vinyl...sexy like maggie gyllenhaal

Muse interview somewhere this week, apparantly some of their stuff for their new album will be quite classical. Don't know if this is a good thing... although they had one or two tracks on Absolution like that, and they turned out great....

picked up the album last week, it's called Fine Fascination, and I'd recommend it. Single is probably the heaviest track on the album, but it's definitely worth a listen.
If you've ever listened to Yellowcard - http://www.yellowcardrock.com/ - you'll like this.
If you haven't listened to Yellowcard, you really should.

Says they're top blokes. His other band, The Darkness, hadn't a clue and everything they earned "went up their noses" apparently.
Absolution was a classic & a return to that style would be brilliant. Black Holes was good in parts but really ordinary for a lot of it too.

An album I'm really looking forward to is ex-Grandaddy frontman Jason Lyttle's first solo album, out later this year.
For those that don't know Grandaddy they're a bunch of bearded Californian truck-driver lookalikes whose sound couldn't contradict their appearance more - honey toned vocals and soft melodies in songs that contain lots of environmental and technical obsolesence themes. I have never liked an album so much on first listen as their 2003 album "Sumday".
I'd say they were in the same camp as Mercury Rev, Pavement, Flaming Lips etc. as slightly weird but very listenable to US bands. I always thought Mercury Rev were a great band but the singer's voice grates on my ears after a while. If Jason Lyttle sang with them they'd be amazing.
The Grandaddy guitarist joined Johnny Marr at Modest Mouse, the acclaimed Portland band.

picked up the new Eminem album, Relapse, and it's a return to form from the Detroit native. Ignore the singles, they're the worst tracks on the album by a distance.
Not as good as The Marshall Mathers Album, but definitely battling it out for the second spot with Slim Shady and The Eminem Show.

Hopefully onwards and upwards with album No 3.

Arctic Monkeys album confirmed for August release.
Ian Brown's new album due for release in September.
In accordance to himself, he's used Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album as the benchmark for song quality - tending to scrap anything that didn't measure up.
As tends to be the case with King Monkey - I don't really know what to make of that.

First impressions are very good in relation to "Humbug" - the new Arctic Monkeys album.
The album has a sense of a band maturing and honing their sound.
Alex Turner has changed the vocal delivery to a sort of Morrisey-like croon, which leads to the vocals being more pronounced and audible.
I think this has had the added affect of reinforcing how brilliant a lyricist Turner is - "The Cornerstone" could be a light-hearted poem in its own right.
This band are going from strength to strengh.

Definitely one of my favourites from this year. Some clever lyrics and the heavier sound suits them very well. It's been getting a bit of a kicking from some critics for being a world away from their debut, but who wants the same album after album?

Yeah - another album of the same stuff would have reduced them to self-parody.
They've done the "clever clever" put downs to death now and the broader influences can be heard on the new record.
