View Full Version : Waterford Athlone Situation

This a joke what the FAI are getting up to now..Apparently athlone fielded an ineligable player and waterford are being given 2 additional points.. FIFA rules are the team in question is docked points for each game the player played in. FAI's new rules as and from yesterday since this came out is that the team playing the team in question are givena 3nil walkover and the points! and i distinctly remember Pats being docked points for Paul Marney a few years ago and no other team getting the points back!I know the FAI didnt run the league back then but yet again something that will stir trouble if thats the gap at the end of the season in terms of who wins the first division.
FAI=a joke and a sham!!!:mad:

That is a strange one alright. Is there anything on their website about it yet though?

You're wrong. The worldwide standard now is to award a 3-0 victory

Thats for a walkover yeah? Are the other team given a walkover if a club fields an ineligible player from now on so? I wasn't aware of that, how long is that in place?

Whatever about awarding the points to Waterford, a 3-0 win is ridiculous. The league could yet be decided by goal difference, so Waterford could win the title thanks to goals they never actually scored.

:(What part of "worldwide standard" are you having trouble with?
Suggest you take it up with FIFA.....

Rules 86 and 126 are the relevant rules for this situation and can be found in this document: http://www.fai.ie/pdf/FAI_Rule_Book.pdf
The new rule is stupid, but it is now the rule unfortunately. The old rule of a three point deduction for the offending club made a lot more sense in my opinion..
However, nothing will be confirmed until after the FAI disciplinary committee meeting tonight but given these new rules, I can't see any other outcome than Athlone forfeiting the game 3-0 to Waterford.
The most striking thing for me in that PDF is the effective date on these rules; "Football Association of Ireland Rules effective from 11th July 2008"..
You actually could have had a situation this year where one rule would have been applied in the first half of the season but another rule being applied in the second half of the season.. Absolutely crazy stuff by the FAI to be bringing this kind of stuff in mid-season! Even if it is a FIFA rule, surely it should be brought in during the close season...?

But the rules are only changed at an FAI AGM - which always takes place in July. The rule applies to all football in this country, not just the LOI. Remember the LOI is in the minority in terms of summer football, most other leagues (including the LOI under-20 league) are winter leagues. The only exceptions that I can think of are the LOI 'A' League, the Ulster Senior League and the Mayo Junior League who are all summer football.
And all the girly leagues...
Good point though

The LOI is the highest level of football in the country though. I think the rules should have come in during the next close season in the LOI, or else come in at different times at the different levels, depending on when their close season is.
In my opinion, this would make more sense than having different rules in the first half and second half of the LOI season.

But then there would be inconsistency among different leagues within the FAI. And different rules among different teams at the same club.
Uniformity allows participants to learn together and receive & distribute the same consistent information.
A rule change means just that. A change in the rules.

Then bring it in during the LOI close season, not the close season in the LSL, the MSL, or some other lower league..
Just because the FAI AGM is in July doesn't mean that the rules have to change in July.
Is this all based on the fact that it says "effective from 11th July 2008" on that pdf?
Can we be sure that the previous revision had a different rule, or is there merely minor changes in this new updated version?

That's a fair enough point to be honest. All the links to older versions of the rulebook that I can find just link to that updated PDF, such as this (http://foot.ie/showthread.php?t=44599)2006 one..
This smells like one of Nick Leeson's plans I tell ya :p

Just thinking there, before the merger with the FAI, the League had their own rule book and some rules were different than that of the FAI rulebook - mainly because the League rule book was effectively written by the clubs. Does anyone know if the League rulebook still differs from the FAI one, or does anyone have a copy of the participation agreement that all club signed - this had a list of the rules in it.

What a bitter pathetic comment Dodge, seriously. I am a passionate Shels supporter and am well-aware of the history between the two clubs but this type of attitude is beyond comprehension. To think I wanted Pats to get through against Berlin...more fool me. Shocking attitude to take.

AFAIK Berlin never used the term "rules are rules" about a points deduction fiasco
How is wanting Waterford or Dundalk to go up ahead of Shels a shocking attitude? Get a grip...

It's not, but to hope we get screwed over by a registration fiasco is really pathetic. I'm all for rivalry, it's an essential part of the game...but would never want a team to win or lose anything "off the pitch"...no matter how much I disliked them. How you can still hate us so much after all this time? Let it go ffs:rolleyes:

We should be awarded all three points.
Athlone were found to have broken the rules and should be punished.

Also, the very fact that Waherfurrrrrrr couldn't get three points against that shocker of a football team is symptomatic of why they wont go up either way. :ball:

Take your two points. It won't make any difference. Waterford will be out of the title race come Friday night anyway.

Yes, but not other clubs. We are fixated with the clubs involved in this particular case. The principle is wrong, end of. Any club could fall foul of this unfair rule. I'd like to think that those that are supporting the fai now will do so in future because be of no doubt it will come up again and again and again .
It's not unfair. Athlone broke the rules so Waterford were awarded the game. If Athlone had not fielded the player maybe they would not have got the draw. It's a standard punishment and to me makes more sense than the previous one.

There is quite a simple solution to all this - promote Waterford AND Dundalk, and nobodies fingers will get burnt...
Exactly. An 11 team premier is the one thing we have not tried, and we all know that ONE of these random changes will sort out Irish football.

There actually was an 11 team premier for half a season when Dublin City folded.. :p
OK, we'll have to go with 13 then.

Waterford handed another 3 points it appears. Graham Kelly is the referee for tomorrow's match with Dundalk.
