OK, I need some feedback here.

I have heard many people here say that they have old matches and programs about the Boys in Green on tape. As we all know, VHS are not compatible with computer and are quickly (if not already) being phased out by DVDs.

Here is my proposal:
If we can get at least 50 different matches/programs on VHS, I'll go out and buy a VHS hook up to the computer, burn all the matches to DVD and send them (and the VHSs) back to the original person and perhaps offer the matches to users here in torrent form (no extra DVDs as those cost money). As no money is changing hands I doubt this is illegal.

As I live in Chicago, that will drastically raise the shipping prices. So, if we have a tech savvy person over there (Tets?) maybe I'll buy the VHS hook up and bring it with me to Ireland when I come over in February. If not, I'll try to do this my self. I'd do my best to cover shipping prices (maybe I'd pay for shipping here, and then ship them out when I get to Dublin).

Feedback, comments, etc. would appreciated

Sounds interesting alright.
I have the signal from my TV streamed around my home network, so I can record from that on any PC on the network. I don't know if it can be used with a VCR.
I do have a PC with a TV card that you can connect a VCR to, so that could be used to record the video. You need a lot of memory to record from the TV card though. The PC itself is fairly and very low spec, I only use it for downloading and burning stuff off to DVD.
If anyone has a fairly high spec machine, I could lend them the TV card to connect the VCR to? It takes S-Video input, and I have the cables to convert a SCART signal to S-Video.

I'm fairly certain the VHS recorder thing is external anyways so it wouldn't take much installation. Anyway I haven't heard anything from anyone saying they have tapes to put into this so it isn't looking good

I will do a survey of the games I have on VHS. Alas won't have time to do it until November at the earliest. I would have taped most Irish games but would have taped over the ones that were a disaster (e.g hoem defeat by Spain). I suspect the quality is starting to fade. I did buy a joint dvd/VHS machine recently with a view to taping one on to the other but haven't got round to seeing does it work.

This is a great idea. If we don't do it now, we'll end up losing a lot of good stuff. I'll do a check on all my old vhs recordings too and post the list up on this thread.

Forgive me if I'm being ignorant here, but how will this work? If you live in Chicago, won't that cause problems with the conversions?

Any Ireland matches taped off RTE/BBC/any European channel, it will be in PAL format (625 lines), which you won't be able to play on an American NTSC (525 lines) VHS.

You'd probably know better than I would, can anyone confirm this? The conversion from PAL to NTSC (or vice versa) should be easy enough with Adobe Premier I would guess anyway

Fair play, the worm. That's a sound gesture on your part.

Admittedly, I'll have to track them down and/or nick them back from relatives but I've got a lot of the originally issued VHS documentary's and compilation highlights of the qualifiers.

The 3 Euro 88 Finals Games
The Road to Italy - RTE Highlights of the home qualifiers for Italia 90
Ole Ole - an independent documentary about our qualifying campaign for Italy
The Road to America - Documentary about the USA 94 campaign

Worm, Like I said before I have every game since about 1995 recorded on some format, some earlier ones make be ropey reception from analogue RTE. I have been gradually converting to DVD. Obviously takes a while and only do it when I can be bothered!

I could seed the Video_TS torrent files then all you have to do is download and burn on to a DVD at the other end. I am not ready to do it yet but may be able to do it in the future.

PAL/NTSC makes no difference these days providing you have a region free DVD player or play with VLC media player on a PC.

That would be great, thanks alot :) However, I'm not looking to get all of these games on DVD, I just want to watch them and also torrent them out to other members of this forum. Unfortunately, I've hit a snag with my VHS thing as as someone pointed out before, PAL will not work over here, so I'm looking for a cheap PAL VCR at the moment.

I think this is a great idea too. I have a good few of the recent games but I'm unsure as to how I would go about converting them, though I'd say most of the people interested in this probably have our recent games recorded too.

I think bennocelts going to send some VHS's over. Once that happens I'll either have to find my own PAL/SECAM VCR or have them converted by a professional...whichever is cheaper.

I'd love to see the Euro 92 qualifier against England at Wembley again. I remember there was a 15-20 minute spell in the first half where we whooped em altogether. Don't have much recorded myself, that Jack's Heroes VHS for the 90 WC but shur who hasn't got that!!! I've the Charlton yrs on tape also. How many Yen to a Euro as well, the documentary about the 02 qualification. Would the whole Long play/Short play thing make any difference when converting I wonder...

I actually already have that thing (or its equivalent). I'm still constantly on eBay trying to buy a Multisystem VCR (for under $50) and I'm usually priced out in the last 5 minutes. I actually have my eye on one finishing in an hour and a half so we'll see. Thats the final piece of the puzzle.
EDIT: Looks like I just got priced out of that one

I've got a few irons in the fire in terms of VCRs for under $50. If I don't get those though $20-$40 USD should do it as most of the ones I've lost on have have ended between $65-$80 (though who knows how high some of the Max bids were). I'm not worried at this point as I really couldn't start till June anyway so I have a little while to keep trying before panic sets in.

So I tracked the package today via UPS online and 2 hours ago it said it had been delivered. I damn near skipped home only to find that there was no package anywhere in sight. I called UPS (where I worked over my break this December) and they confirmed it had been delivered. My parents are out of town so its possible they asked one of the neighbors to pick it up though I kind of doubt it...not sure what the next course of action would be

EDIT: The neighbors had it and everything works great except when I try to play one of benno's tapes its in black and white. I put in Rush Hour (NTSC, American tape) it was in color. Benno I'm guessing the tapes are actually in color right? I'll have to figure out the problem, unless anyone else has some idea?

I probably wont be able to start until June no matter what simply because I won't have the time, but when I do if it continues to not work on the computer at home with TV Tuner (it works, but its in black and white) and if when I can get the newer TV Tuner on the laptop home to see if it works and it doesn't I'll have to buy a signal converter. Maybe I'll bring it to BestBuy or something this weekend to test it on an actual Multisystem TV and make sure the thing actually works or if maybe I have the wrong settings.

Sweet success!!!!

So I lugged my new VCR to my dorm room and tested it on my laptop and it works. I don't have the proper cables with me here (I have just video and one audio here while at home I have all three so its not as good as could be) and nor do I have the time to really get this project going while at school. On the first tape the first thing is highlights of the U17 World Cup against Morocco and a small interview with Brian Kerr but after that is the full match against Spain. I'll probably start with that when I get out of school in early June, but I'm uploading now the highlights and interview with Kerr so you guys can see what it will be like.

Hey Benno do you want me to give you credit either in the RAR file or in the posts (I am sharing them at FBTZ as well as YBIG because they have also donated some material to "the Project")? Also, I think the rest of this tape (2nd tape so far) is largely just Euro 96, which, as far as I know, is widely available online already (certainly at least the highlights are). benno or anyone else, do you want these upped? If you do want it uploaded it'll probably be after all of the Irish stuff.

What I have skipped over on Tape 2: Highlights of Olympics '96: Spain vs France, Portugal vs Argentina, USA vs Tunisia, USA vs Portugal, France vs Saudi Arabia, Argentina vs Spain, Portugal vs France, Nigeria vs Brazil, Nigeria vs Argentina and there was also part of The Charlton Years which I already have if anyone wants it.

Here is an hour long show about Cherry Orchard F.C. and its u-14's run in the 2000 Milk Cup. There is also a slight focus on Rimini's youth team and highlights from games against Middlesbrough and Charlton as well as a few others. They sort of feature a player named Barry Thornton who I don't think ever went on to play at a high level but a young Mark Yeates, formerly of Tottenham and currently of Colchester featured in this team and gets some screen time.
