Finnan has a lot more class than this muppet to be fair to him and I'm glad he returned but I don't think he has really enjoyed internationals in a long time and some of his withdrawals from the squad in the past have being a tad dodgey to say the least.
I'd put that down to being played out of position. Also, the Satuanton era must've really tested a lot of our players patience. Finnan came back when he didn't have to and that's a really good thing to see. From the list above I'd add that Whelan seems absolutely over the moon to be playing with Ireland.
I'd also point out that many managers have touted their players to be called up like Coyle with Chris McCann, Steve Bruce with Reid and McCleish with Keith Fahey. Don't think they'd bother unless those players had a strong desire to play for Ireland as I'm sure all EPL managers wouldn't mind if their players stayed at home during breaks to avoid injuries and have a rest.

Ireland makes interesting comments but I really don't think many players feel like he does.

]Did anyone watching skysports news over the last couple of night notice the alarming amount of players who have been “injured” over the weekend and have to withdraw from their international games this weekend,, mostly from teams that are playing friendlies, qualified or have no chance of qualifying

Not that its excusable but does give weight to what he is saying bout lack of committement.

Interesting (and pretty sad) article by Paul Doyle on the once mighty Belgians over on the Guardian.

"But the mentality of some of the players is deplorable ... we got fed up with the many intolerable things that made it impossible for us to do our jobs ... they are pseudo-stars ... with the sick attitude of childish snobs."
I'd hate to see the Irish team ever reduced to something like this. It's probably a good thing SI isn't involved anymore. I'd hate for his attitude to rub off on any of our young players.

(I appreciate his committment to training etc. but the size of his ego is alarming by the sounds of things)

You can't blame the girl for being pre-occupied.

The problem with Belgium is that they have Belgians playing for them. 'Pour la Belge is er non' - What more can I say?

"I'd hate to see the Irish team ever reduced to something like this" - Never NEVER Never in a million years. The Irish are as proud as punch

Wonder was it an excuse to get off early or should he talk to his grannies about their own near death experiences?

Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
