    Stan to go?

i think that it is too early for stan to go. alright we lost. but it was not too bad. 1-0 was regarded as a decent result before the match. we did improve since the holland game and i think that this shows that stan can learn. he needs more time. at least he showed that he has passion tonight.

I think his squad selection and team selection has been consistently poor since he took over and he hasn't done anything to prove to me that he has any tactical knowledge. He really needs a win quick to get the press off his back. It is too early to call for his head, but I'm worried that it will be justified soon enough.

He made some bad mistakes like putting finnan at left back and putting duff on the wrong wing but the reason Ireland lost is because they are a poor team. He got them giving an effort, except keane who couldn't give a sh*te and should never have got the captaincy, and showing some pride but they lack the fundamentals like retaining the ball and passing to feet and should have lost the game by 2 or 3 goals if it wasn't for given. To quote Brady it was 'Depressing' but I still think that with a bit of luck and heart like we saw tonight, we can qualify second from this fairly average group

OK so Given is a great keeper, it's not a negative that he pulled off some great saves, it's a positive. On another day he might have got to the deflection as well!!

I think stan was the wrong choice and I think we will finish 4th or 5th in this group but we have to give him some sort of a chance, he's had 4 games for gods sake!

He's had four games but he's lost three of them. We haven't scored in any of them either. Something's wrong. When did Ireland last go three games without scoring? Anybody got that stat?

McCarthy's first 3 games in charge 10 years ago.

    Russia 0-2
    Czech Republic 0-2
    Portugal 0-1

Ha! Very good Eirebhoy, that's excellent.

There are some awful posts going up here. If some people had their way, we'd change manager every time we lost a few games.

This is not a great Ireland team. In fact, it's quite a poor one, with no more than three genuinely world-class players. We lost 1-0 due to a deflected goal playing one of the top teams in the world on their turf. That's not too bad, is it?

I would have preferred a win, obviously, but it was clear as day from that game that we just don't have the central midfield to take on the great teams.

Give Stan the campaign and judge him then, be fair, at least.

I think he was the wrong choice at the time of hiring too... But I wouldn't call for his head at this point.. Maybe he'll turn it around like Strachan!!!

I'm not fond of the choice of him as manager but we need to get a grip here. He's only had one competitive game so far away against the group's top seeds and freshly finished placed 3rd in the world team and we lost 1-0 via an own goal. We need a full campaign to judge him completely.

On the subject of friendly results: Finland lost 2-1 to Norn Iron at home, but they beat Poland 3-1 away while Norn Iron lost 3-0 at home to Iceland. The Dutch struggled to beat a minnow 1-0.

    Right!!!

Its as simple as this. You only have to look at Stauton and the way he comes across, he looks completly lost, and his team selection and subs were beyond belief!!! ffs.

First, if you want to win football matches you need to use your players and in there positions!!! and not out of position ffs!!

    Didn't think it'd need explaining.

It's his team selections I'm worried about, not his friendly results.

The Cyprus game is now crucial for Staunton and Ireland. We are creating too few chances and even against a team like Cyprus this could prove a disaster. They will be a very difficult team for us to breakdown even more so after their thrashing by Slovakia. Stan wil be stuck in the stand (due to his own lack of discipline) and things could go rapidly wrong. Not winning would be the end for Staunton. The clamour would be too much. However if we win and then go on and get at least a draw against Slovakia then it really could kick start our campaign. But I'm not optimistic. His decision to take off Duff on Saturday (not injured) was bizarre.

Need to give him more time. There is no point in changing coaches now, I say wait till we have played the likes of Czechs, Slovaks and Welsh as they are the teams we will be going against for 2nd place.

Though I do think he has made some mistakes. We should have played more friendlies in the summer, partnerships like Reid and O'Shea and Keane and Doyle need to develop and at the moment there is no understanding between them. As a result our shape went wrong and, although individually most players did well, the team didnt play as a unit (except the defence).

I also wonder why Elliott was brought on when a more physical player (Morrison etc) might have been able to put the Germans under more pressure especially from crosses. However that might not have been Stan's choice as he was ejected by then.

I'd give Stan more time, but he must know he is under pressure now 3 defeats, have to get 4 points from the next 2 matches (in fact even then we might need 6).

I would still have him ahead of Kerr.
