First of all because UEFA wouldn't allow it. Derry only came in as there wasn't any alternative!

Surely it would make sense for the 2 clubs in west Belfast - DC and Linfield or the 2 clubs in north Belfast to merge Crusaders and Cliftonville. In reality it doesn't make sens for any of them to merge.

Linfield are south Belfast but their ground is close to west Belfast to be fair!
Donegal Celtic's Chairmain is on the record having stated that his club are committed to playing in the Irish League, under the authority of the Irish Football Association.

In summary :
1) Why should they merge ? Is it just because you consider them 'Catholic' ?
2) Why would they want to merge ? They're 2 very different clubs with very different histories, serving different communities. And they're rivals.
3) Why would thye not only merge but then erase any sense of their previous identites by adopting the title of a team that died 60yrs ago that they have no connection with ?
4) The Belfast Celtic name is actually owned by someone, so couldn't just be adopted willy nilly. It's current owner has expressed no interest in seeing the club revived, nor is there any pressure form anyone in Belfast to revive the club.
5) Why should they move league if they did or even didn't merge ? Again, is it just because you consider them Catholic teams in a league you consider predominantly Protestant?
6) Why would the EL want to accept them ? In particular, Donegal Celtic would add nothing to either a merger or the EL. They have no fans and an absolutely dreadful ground.
7) Why would anyone in UEFA/FIFA sit by and let it happen without kicking-up an almighty fuss ?
8) Why would anyone in the Northern Irish assembly and Irish government not put serious pressure on the FAI to stop any such move ?
And that's only a brief summary for starters.

If any Northern team will be joining the Eircom League it will be Linfield, however I can't see that happening...

It's time people forgot about teams changing leagues etc.
The only way we'll have an all-ireland league is if their is a break-away between the LOI and Irish League teams.
And even then it is not feaseable unless we get some sort of UEFA blessing and have our European places still intact. But how would it work with an independant governing body who has no say in the two National sides I don't know.
However I do not think unifying the two leagues would help standards much anyway. Sure their will be a few more bigger games, but what really would it change?
