Another Gerry Cassidy recommendation. Apparently he has coached at Villa and Ajax and played with Newcastle !

    Nothing confirmed yet but...

...his name is Rob McDonald. Used to play with Newcastle United. He signed for Newcastle in 1989 from PSV Eindhoven. Also played with Besiktas in Turkey. Last heard of he was sacked as manager of De Grafschapp in the Dutch league.

Life without Rovers, it makes no sense...it's a heartache...nothing but a fools game. S.R.F.C.

Rob McDonald spent 17 years playing for some of Europe’s finest clubs, including Newcastle United, PSV Eindhoven, and Sporting Lisbon. After hanging up his boots as a pro, McDonald immediately moved into professional coaching, spending six years as the head manager of top-level clubs in the Dutch Premier League and South African Premiership. McDonald was chosen by AFC Ajax in 2000 to open and run its incredibly successful Ajax Capetown youth training academy in South Africa.
He was linked with the Bohs job before Farrelly got the gig, IIRC.
A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.

Sounds like he could be a man of good contacts to bring in lads from outside Ireland. It looks like an interesting appointment and always nice to see a new face in the league. I wonder if he's the Stuart Baxter/Roy Hodgson type or is he completely crap.

IMO sounds like an outstanding person to get for the job, with the experience and contacts he has it can only be good for the club. Especially with so many young lads on the books.

I also heard Rod McDonald by text but can only presume it was a typo on the SMS!!
