This thread just went off the rails when I said McCarthy was a great "Irishman" which seemed to ruffle some western feathers.

Nice to see Sunderland winning at home yesterday - a very rare occurence. However, unless they put some wins together in the league I would be amazed if he can survive much longer. Managers have been sacked for far less in the past. I know he did a good job getting them up, but that wasn't good enough for the likes of Gary Megson and others in the past.

West Brom were in the position to be able to pay off Megson and still provide a tempting financial package for the new manager - Robson - Sunderland are still in a precarious position financially, even though things have improved greatly under McCarthy. So, if Sunderland were to sack him, they would be putting themselves into a worse position financially and would not be able to provide funds to a new manager for new players to the same level that West Brom did. One of the pundits made the point at the start of the season (think it might have been Lawrenson) that Sunderland were more likely to go down because they had not been able to improve their Championship-winning squad to any great degree, whereas West Ham and Wigan had the cash to bring in the likes of Camara, Henchoz, Benayoun, etc, and when the transfer window opened up, they would be again be able to bring in players to strengthen positions they were weak in, and Sunderland wouldn't be in that same position. And he'd been proved right.
