For the sake of throwing out names, I'll say Richie Partridge, Michael Reddy, Jason Gavin, Sean Thornton, Gareth Whalley, Willo Flood and these days Owen Garvan and Chris McCann.
Some good ones in there. I always thought Lee Trundle was worth a shot. I know he never made the EPL but he had ridiculous skill, could score and create plenty of goals and could have offered something completely different at a time when we didn't have great striking options. He was mad keen to play for us too, iirc.
Slightly off-topic...I was having a look at the line up for the B game against Scotland in 2006 (McCarthy played in that) and noticed that Lewis Emanuel (who I thought was decent that night) was arrested and remanded for armed robbery in June this year. He's only 30.
A smokescreen.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!
Recall coming across Emanuel myself in Football Manager at one point. Don't think I ever called him up, mind. Suppose it was a lucky enough call; even though he was suspected of having a proper shot on him, he was later found out in possession: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-23930360
An ex-Bradford City footballer has admitted taking part in an armed robbery at a Post Office.
At Hull Crown Court, Lewis Emanuel, 29, pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.
He was one of two men wearing balaclavas who went into the Post Office in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire, in May.

Hadn't heard that about Emanuel. I thought he looked decent in the B game too. Sad end to his career.
I always thought that Gary Kelly (son of Alan Snr) deserved a cap. Lee Power, too. Might be rose-tinted glasses, but I thought he had real potential at Norwich.
Hello, hello? What's going on? What's all this shouting, we'll have no trouble here!
- E Tattsyrup.
Lee Power is a complete wrong 'un by all accounts.
Derek Geary - there's a blast from the past. One of a handful of Irish players who played for both Sheffield clubs. I liked him as a player. A busy full back and good going forward. Didn't play for us because I think we were always well served at full back.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
I think I remember Geary publically quizzing why he wasn't getting picked for squads too.
Alan Dunne at Millwall maybe ? Even more so if he is a LB, is he ?
Sean Devine, Paddy Kohlmann, Gavin Mahon (in his Watford/QPR days), James O'Conner, Kevin Gallen (apparently wanted to play for us but Francis and McDonald said it would harm his career), Jay Tabb, Mark Yeates maybe (given Andy Keogh got in the sqaud). Hopefully Aidy White will get the call soon.
Paddy is on the bench this afternoon. Garvan doesn't make the matchday squad..
Realistically, I don't think Paddy has a chance of playing for Palace this season. Very disappointing not to see Garvan even on the bench. It would have been fairytale stuff after his prediction that he would outlast Holloway at Palace. Suppose he still did but it seems very much like a hollow victory at the moment.
