My Facebook memory from 10 years ago today was "Utterly depressing. At least it gets easier ".

I don't think it is getting any easier!

20 years today since our last World Cup game

To really hammer home how long that has been, Andrew Omobamidele was born a week after this game

Ok ~ with hindsight ~ Robbie Keane should have taken the Harte penalty ( Harte was having a bad run of form from play and penalties / free-taking ) during the match ~ How did Killer (much as I love him ) miss the rebound ~ And some of our penalties in the shoot-out were poor but that can happen ! !

20 years ago today I was old enough to remember four World Cups and Ireland had qualified for and reached the knockout stages of three of them. To someone my age (20 at that point) it was just the norm that we were there and were competitive - I had never seen anything different to that.

I can remember the 70’s and 80’s where qualifying for anything seemed an impossible dream. We had a lot of good players in those years, and I particularly remember the 82 WC qualifiers under Eoin Hand where we were desperately unlucky, and the victim of some, let’s say, questionable, refereeing away to Belgium. Still think we would have acquitted ourselves well in Espana 82. Brady, Stapleton, Lawrenson, O’Leary, in their prime, Ronnie Whelan just breaking through, and a handful of other solid players, Grealish, McDonagh, Langan, Gerry Daly. I remember thinking we had a better side than the North at the time, didn’t seem fair that they got to the finals out of a much easier group.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

It's probably 25 years since Ireland beat Iceland in any sport

Didn't our Under 19s give Iceland a good beating just there during the summer?! 3-0 or something like that?

Yeah played them twice over in Spain back in June. Beat them 3-0 in the first game and lost 1-0 in the second game.

25 years ago, a. 2-1 loss on the second leg of the 1998 World Cup play off against Belgium
Their second goal is contentious, the linesman gave a throw to us, but was overruled by the referee, and Belgium scored from the throw.
The whole game is on YouTube, with Spanish commentary. Goals at 26:50, 1:03:40, and 1:14:20

30 years since drawing 0-0 against Spain, Aldridge was robbed for a goal by a dodgy offside decision

VAR would have been interesting there. The Spanish left back might have been playing Aldridge on-side and who knows what was going on ~ on the right side out of camera.

Some great names from the past ~ ~ Irish and Spanish ~ ~ Butragueno (?) and many others.

Nadal ~ ~ the Beast of Barcelona ~ ~ Not to be confused with Goicocheia (?) ~ ~ The Butcher of Bilbao, and obviously far more dangerous at chopping you down ~ ~ I’,m pretty sure that he was the guy that broke Maradona’s ankle while Maradona was at Barcelona.
