Irish Players in the "Top 20 outside the Premiership"

    http://sport.independent.co.uk/footb...cle3324380.ece

Article in (London) Independent on the top 20 players outside the Premier League.

Owen Garvan & Sean Scannell are listed separately among the best teenagers and Aiden McGeady is mentioned but not listed in the 20, citing the poor performances of Petrov, Maloney and Ferguson as an example of how good SPL players aren’t necessarily good EPL players (though you could argue that Arteta counters this…).

Hoolahan, Norris & McCann are said to have nearly made the list.

Only Walters & Reid are in the 20. This is what they say:

    Jonathan Walters (Ipswich Town)
Age: 24 Position: Forward Nationality: English (Irish U21) Value: £2.5m Interested: Newcastle, Wigan.
Striker successfully converted to the right flank by Jim Magilton. Ex-Blackburn trainee, who was also released by Bolton. Signed from Chester for £150,000 plus add-ons last January.

    Andy Reid (Charlton)
Age: 25 Position: Midfield Nationality: Irish (full) Value: £2m.
No one doubts he has the talent, but does he have the drive to realise it? Capable of running a game in the hole, but leaves a hole when the opposition have the ball. Lovely left foot. Time still on his side.

I think it's very harsh to say Maloney has been a poor performer. He has done well whenever he has got the chance. For some reason O'Neill just won't give him a decent chance. When he does get the chance it's either up front or on the right. The exact same positions he was tried at Celtic and failed (he's still a safe option there and will always be an excellent link up player who rarely gives the ball away). He's a left sided midfielder and imo Scotland's best player. I really rate him highly. Anyway, that's nothing to do with Ireland.

It must take a while to research for an article like that so I won't be too critical. I'd rate Andy Reid higher than Ben Watson though (my brothers a Palace fan).

Keith Andrews is the top League 2 player in that article btw.

Interesting to see that 13 of the 20 players from the 2007 list are now in the Premiership. This is the first time they've included SPL players.

I was wondering that - I presume they were implying that he was english born but only declared for Ireland at u-21 level?

    What about Messi?

Thought Andy Reid was nearly 30.
He's well able for the Premiership.
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

I think its referring to the fact he's a full irish international although he certainly may be partial to a full irish!

Just thinking, it's hard not to when Celtic's 3 best players don't even make the list. I don't think they should have included SPL players but it is a very weak list all the same. Surely there's better players than Fuller and Naysmith in the league?

In a similar vein, FourFourTwo had a list of 100 Players Your Club Should Buy in their January issue.
The Irish players included were Shane Supple, Ken Oman, Joe Gamble, Stephen Bradley (who has since signed for Falkirk), Keith Fahey, Lee Frecklington, Graham Kavanagh, Mark Quigley, and John O'Flynn.
Liam Daish was included in the list of managers that would appeal to a club in trouble because of his work with Ebbsfleet .
All goals, yellow and red cards tweeted in real time on mastodon, BlueSky and facebook

Is it just me or is it daft that McGeady isn't listed compared to some of the shítehawks that are?

Some of them have been in the Premier League before and have proved to be decidely ordinary.

And then there's Boruc and Nakamura who are a lot more important to Celtic atm than McGeady. They say Naka's age was against him but then still include Naysmith. I'll try to ignore the SPL players in the list though but it really is a poor list quality wise. Is that the best 17 players in the championship?
