R.I.P. TommyAcclaimed folk musician and singer Tommy Makem has died at his home in Dover, New Hampshire in the US.
He was aged 74 and had been suffering from lung cancer
" I wish to God that someone would be able to block out the voices in my head for five minutes, the voices that scream, over and over again: "Why do they come to me to die?"
Aw. My dad knew him well from tours overlapping in the 70's & will be gutted when he hears this. I myself met him in the late 80's while I was doing my Junior Reporter bit for our School Magazine. I was waiting to Interview Stefan Denis (yes he of Neighbours & dodgy pop fame) and Tommy was stayin in the hotel where the interview was happening. I chatted with him & my Photographer took a pic of me with him. A total gentleman. RIP Tommy.
your photographer?
I'm a bloke,I'm an ocker
And I really love your knockers,I'm a labourer by day,
I **** up all me pay,Watching footy on TV,
Just feed me more VB,Just pour my beer,And get my smokes, And go away
True pioneers for Irish folk music, a real loss
RIP Tommy
Hard to believe but Bob Dylan used to open for Makem & The Clancy Brothers, way back when.
I can't stop, I can't start
It holds me together while it tears me apart
RIP tommy LEGEND
Was he crazy!! Yeah , in a very special way , an Irishman.
I slept, and dreamed that life was Beauty;
I woke, and found that life was Duty.
"Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody well dead?"
I hope you're singing that above in heaven just now. God rest you Tommy, you gave inspiration to many that followed.
