Yeah, I'd say he probably is, judging from precedent involving ATMs erroneously dispensing excess notes.
Just a wee query someone here might be able to help out with.
A mate of mine has just been onto me about this and I aint got a clue so thought i'd throw it up here and see if anyone knows what the story is.
He's at college in Dublin and before Christmas he received a cheque for €950 from teh college. There was nothing in the envelope only the cheque. Without querying where the 950smackers came from he lodged the cash into his bank account.
Yesterday he was contacted by the college saying they sent it in error and he reckons he aint givin' em back their dosh (prob due to the fact he drank it over XMas ) but was wondering if he'd be legally oblidged to pay up...
Anyone enlighten me...

A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.
Similar thing happened my sister, well it was through work but she didnt have to repay it.Dont think you are legally obliged to do so.
not really. it was their error so tough. it would cost them a hell of a lot more to pursue him thru courts for the money. only problem is its trinity.so logic goes out window.. he just sit tight. worse case scenario is he be forced to pay(but I doubt he would)
i heard a story the other day that in bank errors you have to pay back - but on your terms ie it can be as little as a euro a day!
happened to someone who mysteriously found an extra 10,000 "loan" from his bank in his a/c one day
he had to pay back but on his terms
could be BS tho
i dunno
Might be worth his while paying back if he wants to graduate. Our college wouldn't let you graduate if you had a library fine - never mind owing them €950.
He might find that his exams are scrutinized a bit more too.
The exact thing happened to my brother last year, although it was a bacs transfer. He told the uni to stick it as he said he hadn't even noticed the money going in and spent it. He graduated last year. It's different when a bank makes the mistake but it is an error of the finance dept in the uni and will be written off by them.
As Irishmen we dilute our sense of nation by depending on the English to bring us our balls
Did nt something happen a few years back where the bank lodged a million quid into some guys bank account and he took out the money and ran to spain , they forced him to come back and they came to some deal over the money i think as he had spent a few grand .
Let his conscience be his guide.
Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.
