    Switzerland

Was watching the Switzerland v N Korea match last night and I must say that the Swiss are a very solid side, v organised with a good mix of aggression and skill.

Maybe some of us were being a bit unrealistic/optimistic in thinking that Ireland would beat them of France for one of the qualification places...

We still competed very well with them though.

How did they get on against South Korea though ?

Yes, the Swiss are a difficult side to beat but no world beaters but then, neither are we.

The Swiss are a lot better than most people realise - they are one of those teams with no 'star' players but who can work effectively as a unit and get good results against supposedly better sides ... they were unlucky to not beat France in their first game which would have had them going to the second round with a 100% record.

I just made a post about that in the World Cup forum, I just realised that
our group was the only qualifying group to produce two stage two teams
so we were very unlucky. In any other group we may well have qualified.

Its was 2:00 AM in the morning when the torrent I was downloading finished and I watched the game, but if I recall the Switz were packing 9 men across the 18 yard box, only had one chance for each side (Ian Harte header off a corner early, and Frei had a chance that Given pulled off a great save to)

The Swiss are a poor side with no invention whatsoever and nothing going for them other than an organised defence. Which doesn't say much for the Irish team of the last campaign.

The Swiss are muck. Reminiscent of Norway in the 90s.

Im getting this recurrant nightmare recently - an England-Switzerland Final.

Viewing figures will be about 40million. Down 3.2billion from last time.

Not true. It just shows show hard they are to beat. They didn't concede a goal in 4 games. No wonder we drew 3 out of the 4 times with them and France also couldn't beat them either.

Streller must feel a right eejit today. The big lanky striker looked ridiculous with his big long run up to the penalty, rolling his tongue around and duffing it straight at the keeper.

They played EXACTLY like every Irish team in the knockout stages of a world cup.

Ireland vs Spain 2002 was nothing like that. The Holland game in 1994 can't be compared either bearing in mind the furnace conditions it was played in. The Romania game (I quote David Pleat - which I don't do very often): "Ireland deserve to go through as they were the only team that tried to win that game".

The Swiss are out but Ukraine don't deserve to be in the last 8. They have been absolutely terrible in 3 matches so far.
