I could make a gay joke about his nomination but it'd be in bad taste!

Don't get me wrong, he's been a pleasant surprise alongside Dunne in the centre of our defence in the early stages of our campaign, but if he gets player of the year I won't know what to do.

    Hope it goes to Shay.

I'd imagine it's because of the new under 23 team, they decided to have one nominee from that and he played well for them and scored the last minute winner against the North. No chance of him winning.

Good for a LoI player to be in that company though, it's the kind of thing that catches the attention of casual supporters.

He has been very good so far under Trap, definately one of our most consistant players. Some people have it so drilled into their heads that they think he is crap that they cant even admit it to themselves when he plays well
    Its really not that complicated!!!

I've been one of his biggest critics but no doubt he has improved, which, in fairness, wasn't that hard to do. Still having lapses of ball watching, first Polish goal for example.

No way should he be in line player of the year. Should be between Doyle, Dunne and Given.

Agreed, the Dunne/O;Shea partnership has started well.

How many times has Shay won the senior player award ?

The last 2 years I think.

Odd player of the year nominations too, I'd put Duff and Dunne over O Shea.
The 1st bit is obvious sarcasm so please put in the !

As for the Duff thing.......well that definetley deserves a !

I'm not one of these people. I think he's done very well under Trap.

But there is no question in my mind that he is the weaker half of the Dunne-O'Shea axis, and thus there is no way he should be nominated ahead of Richard Dunne for player of the year.

If there was a "most improved," then I'd consider giving it to him, but this isn't a U-13 side.

For the record Rice is a better player than all three and played more international football for his country this year than Gibson or Long

    Senior
    Kevin Doyle - Reading
    Shay Given – Newcastle United
    John O’Shea – Manchester United
Given, but why isn't Dunne nominated?
    Young/U23
    Aiden McGeady - Celtic
    Andy Keogh - Wolves
    Stephen Rice – Shamrock Rovers
    McGeady

    U21
    Owen Garvan – Ipswich Town
    Stephen Quinn – Sheffield United
    Darren O’Dea - Celtic
Close call between Garvan and Quinn. Garvan.

    International Goal of the Year
    Robbie Keane v Cyprus (H) 15/10/08
    Andy Keogh v Serbia (H) 24/05/08
    Kevin Doyle v Georgia (A) 6/09/08
The build up to Doyle and Keane's goals were brilliant, the finish was simple enough. But I'm going to go with Keogh's goal.

    League Of Ireland
    Owen Heary (Bohemian FC)
    Brian Murphy (Bohemian FC)
Keith Fahey (St. Patrick’s Ath/Birmingham City)
    Fahey

    U19 Nominees
    Michael Spillane - Norwich
    Brendan Moloney – Nottingham Forest
    Garry Breen – Hereford United
Spillane, played more first team football than the other two

    U17 Nominees
    Conor Hourihane – Sunderland
    Ger Hanley – Salthill Devon
    Aaron Doran – Blackburn Rovers
Doran seemed to change the game when he came on in the recent qualifiers for the U-19s, so he gets the nod

Don't know enough about the rest of the categories to comment
All goals, yellow and red cards tweeted in real time on mastodon, BlueSky and facebook

Senior John O'Shea - looks really good under Trap and has also won the CL and premiership.

    U23 Aiden McGeady

    U21 Stephen Quinn

    LoI Keith Fahey

    U19 - can't really judge that one as i didn't see them.

U17 - Ger Hanley looks a great keeper but needs to grow. - Hourihane missed most of the games I saw and Doran did well also.

Eh? part 1 ... You may have missed it but there is a forum on this very website which tells you more than you ever need to know about the likes of Stephen Rice and other locally based players.

Eh? part 2 .. the clue is in the u23 part of the nomination title. Again you may have missed it but we have an u23 team - again that's been covered at length elsewhere on this website.

I didn't think Spillane was still u19. Remember seeing him play u19s about 2/3 years ago at centre half beside Noel Haverty and thinking he was the only player likely to make the senior side. He was a man amongst boys
