seen him a load of times scoring on the final score on bbc on saturday evenings! good player....bit too old maybe??
According to here we're the favourites to sign him as he is planning a move to the eircom league. To be honest, ive never seen him play but obviously his record speaks for itself. Is he really that good? Surely at 35 years of age hes past his best..
ARKINS SET TO MOVE TO EIRCOM LEAGUE
35-year-old Vinny Arkins is set to
leave Irish League side Portadown after
a decade at the club, according to
reports today.
Arkins, who scored 248 goals for
Portadown, was told by boss Ronnie
McFall that he was free to leave the
club.
It is believed that there are four
eircom League clubs who have already
contacted the player ,with Longford
Town leading the bunch.

I don't care how old he is if he scores goals....
It will come down to money in the end though because he was on huge wages up North AFAIK.
He does know Alan Mathews well alright but I would think a lot depends on his wage demands. If he's looking for big money I don't think he would be a good signing, we don't have huge amounts of money to be lashing out on players.
Upwards to the vanguard where the pressure is too high.
I heard Dundalk were favourites to get him? I wonder if we're after him?.
Life without Rovers, it makes no sense...it's a heartache...nothing but a fools game. S.R.F.C.
Lads going backwards I believe by signing Arkins..perfectly good centre forward in shane barratt but playing him out of position on the wing..getting rid of your best players in early twenties both captains last year and bringing in a guy who is definitely past his sell by date..can you imagine arkins & myler up front..come on Matthews..instill some life into the squad..your on your last legs as it is..!!
We didn't get rid of our best players - we couldn't match the offer's they got from other clubs. Mind you, Barry hounded out by elements of the support too - pretty much what some of you are trying with Matthews.Originally Posted by obwon

Heard an excellent interview with Matthews on our local radio station yesterday about how disappointing the season was. There was a lot of negativity in the squad and he has said that most of that negativity is gone and really showed in the latter part of the season. He also mentioned the rovers away game (4-2) and Finn Harps away (5-0). What I took from this point was that there was more to these games than just not playing well and losing.
He said he has made 4 signings which he wont announce publicly yet
Ever get the feelin' you have been cheated?

Wonder who the signings are? Maybe Arkins deal is finalised?
It might be repeated later today, not sure if we have sports today though. I'll check it out

That interview was 1st aired last wednesday morning, i doubt arkins was among the 4 players he was talking about, at a guess i would say two of them are kevin doherty and shay kelly, thats only a guess i could well be wrong
If god wanted us to play football in the clouds he would have put grass up there!
Could well be that they're two of them . I heard we were talking to both of those players anyway

Vinny Arkins was a class striker; however I (and most IL fans) now believe he is "done"!
If thats the case he'd probably suit us because thats the type of player that Matthews usually goes for... rejects!!

Yeah, I thought that would be the case. He's 35 sure! Grandad!Originally Posted by BleusAvantTout
