    Heathrow Terminal 5 Chaos

    BBC News

Baggage system chaos yesterday on opening of much advertised new Terminal 5. British Airways have sole use of this Terminal. No check in baggage allowed yesterday. Will damage to BA reputation be permanent?

Nice advert for the new Terminal on British Airways website

I wonder if they did any trial runs of the Terminal before it was opened?

Very good. Several airlines (not including BA) have taken BAA to court over recent large increases in airport charges. Having a virtual monopoly of London airports helps. Yesterdays chaos won't help their cause.

It drives me nuts when Ryanair etc start complaining about increasing airport taxes. We still pay them when we are booking the flights.

O leary could take a leaf out of walshs book with this statement.

Willy walsh "British Airways has not delivered and we need to deliver," he said. "I am accepting responsibility, the buck stops with me."

You are correct to say airport taxes are paid by the passengers but the UK have probably the highest in Europe already & Ireland not far behind. Increased airfares due to taxes means less passengers for airlines.

Airlines angrily predicted that British travellers would be priced out of the air and demanded that the BAA London airports monopoly be broken up. Behind the higher charges is a Civil Aviation Authority ruling today that BAA, creaking under £10billion of debt, could raise it charges to airlines by 23.5 per cent from next month and by more than 10 per cent per annum for the next four years.
BAA are a private monopoly just like the public monopoly in Ireland. Monopolies are not good for customers. This is way off topic as T5 is BAA & BA problem.

Heathrow is a godforsaken hole, so is Glasgow Airport, which is also owned by BAA, Standsted and Gatwick are bearable...
