    Downtime

Sorry about the downtime today, I was expecting two outages of a couple of minutes and got nearly a couple of hours instead.

All to the greater good though, one more piece in the jigsaw that is our new home in CIX.

(Foot.ie is the second one from the top.)

Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.

i had a feeling you had long hair!

I'm interested to hear about the security around the data centre, in terms of how one can get in, fencing etc, accessory carrying into the data centre etc. Just been working on a project around security and in data centres there is a huge risk around the physical side of infrastructure and i don't mean physical servers.
Hearing what visa go through its unreal.....

Its a pity I didn't hear about that open day I'd actually be very interested in that sort of thing. I've always been a coder/developer so there's always been an aura of mystery surrounding the black boxes the code hides on. Its a bit of a shock actually that CIX is the first, there is definately a market for second-location mirroring with the Dublin centres. Well done lads

I actually didn't up until last year. It's a new thing. Might be gone again in July for the wedding.

Security isn't massively tight as yet, because the only live customers are the directors themselves. When we're up and running fully you'll need to be buzzed in a set of gates to the car park, and buzzed in the main door to reception. If you don't actually need access to your kit, you can be patched through to your network in our hotdesk area. If you need to get to the data centre proper, you'll need to be a "registered visitor", and you'll be escorted through the locked NOC to wherever it is you need to go. We didn't go for any of the fancy biometric stuff, it's mostly just for show and we felt that our money would be better spent on infrastructure. We do have infrared, motion-sensiive cameras throughout the building though, and of course we have fire detection, building management, etc.

That's pretty much what Tom does, I tend to let him off and stick to the crap jokes.

You're welcome to have a look around. Now's a good time because we're not fully up and running yet, so you'll get access to areas that'll be locked down later.

No-one's more surprised than me, it's a big step up from the little computer room I originally intended building in my dad's old shop. However we have a good team and we didn't arse about with the project planners that wanted to charge more than we've spent on the entire facility. If we had, we'd still be a year away from opening. Huge market for DR in Cork. Can't be done in Dublin, none of the DCs are far enough away from each other.

    Thanks,
    adam

That sign's been there for a fortnight, I think it might stay at this stage. It's like a member of the family it's given us so much fun.

Ya, as well as that you are entering dangerous territory with the biometric stuff. Sounds like a lot of planning went into it by all accounts!! Not being funny but I assume there is a firedoor, and if so where is that located, I mean its not at the back of the servers or anything like that?!

There's several fire doors, the whole place is regulated by a fire certificate and fire officer, which is actually why our MV connection was delayed -- we went off-plan* during the building, so the plan had to be redrawn. Of course we also have a double-knock fire suppression system on the main floor, that would apparently would blow the walls off if it was fired without vents in place. I love little facts like that. The power setup in our DC is extemely innovative, it's worth reading about on the site. The cold air containment and CRAH/chiller communication should make us Ireland's most efficient data centre.

EDIT: Sorry, I sound like a marketroid now. Data centres are like Fisher Price to me, all I'm short is a bit of string to tow it along behind me so I can show it off to my friends.

Ya I liked the piece on "free cooling".

You probably wont answer this but how much did all this cost?! I understand if you dont want to go into that on this site. Sounds like serious wad of cash was spent on this and I have an ideavabout the cost of yearly maintenance on things like this too, which is more than a "little" expensive

I'm not going to specify paul, except to say that it was probably less than you'd think. Power outstrips maintenance costs by a long shot. Our products are square feet and amps.
