Costello hunting new club

Title-winning full back Greg Costello, who was released by
Shamrock Rovers at the end of last season, believes he has the
ability to compete at the top of eircom League soccer for at least
the next two seasons – but must first convince a Premier Division
club to take him on.

Costello and fellow Shams defender Pat Scully – both in their
early 30s – must find new employers for the new season, and
with clubs preparing to begin pre-season training within the next
fortnight, they do not have long to sort out their futures.

But while Scully has been reportedly tracked by several clubs,
including Derry City, Longford Town, Drogheda United and newly-
promoted Waterford United, Costello has not been inundated
with requests for his signature.

The former Shels man, who helped Rovers to the FAI Cup final
last October, said: “I want to get back as quickly as possible. I’d
like to stay in the Premier Division, because I feel I can play well
at that level for another season or two. I’m disappointed I’ve
been let go by Rovers, but it’s time to move on from that now.”

Personally I hope Athlone dont waste time and money on him
as, in my opinion, he only used the club (as with Kilkenny) to get
fit for his dream move to Shams!

I thought Costello was an excellent right back with Town but looked silly when pushed into a midfield role by Buckley. We had a problem at the right back position all last season.

We should set our sights now, make sure we have a good chance of promotion and look to sign a backbone of Costello, Scully and Myler.
