The proposed Richmond Arena, St Pat’s insist, will have corporate and conference facilities as part of the new build.

“We know that one of the things that militates against growing attendances in League of Ireland matches is the lack of facilities,” says O’Mahony.

“Somewhere to get a decent bite to eat, comfortable seating. Because this would be a brand new state-of-the-art stadium, it would tick every single one of those boxes.

“It would have all the facilities that fans could want. All seats covered and comfortable facilities.

People might say ‘why do you need 12,000-seats when you’re only getting 2,000 at your matches?’ The answer to that is we know we’re not going to get 12,000 at every match but we believe that we can grow our attendances very substantially if we have a stadium like this to offer and then, when the big matches come and European matches, and other games like Ireland Under-21s and Women’s internationals, that we will fill the place.

“We want to grow our fanbase throughout west Dublin, and by having these facilities and playing attractive football, as we do, allied to having a brand new, comfortable stadium it is all designed to making the club more sustainable in the long run.

“It’s a case of ‘build it and they’ll come’ but certainly better facilities give you better crowds.”

From that Indo article, St Pat’s president Tom O’Mahony said

“We have spoken to TDs and councillors. It would be fair to say that we got quite a positive reponse from the people we have spoken to"
It appears that Paul Hand, an Independent councillor for the area and self proclaimed St Pats fan is not one of them

He certainly appears to be making an ass of himself - surely he could make more positive noises about it?

Well considering he represents a hugely undeveloped part of Dublin City he should welcome any proposal that wants to invest millions into an new Town center with shopping, civic facilities that will only improve the lives of locals residents. There nobody at Pats that thinks that the way forward is anything but difficult but the proposals to me apart from the stadium look exciting for Inchicore with the stadium on top it is a game changer.

It looks like he has done no research into the proposal whatsoever and just wanted to get on the tele

That's the way it looks alright.

It is a pity that the first highly publicised reaction to the plans were so negative

That's exactly it, I do believe in the 'rising tide raises all boats' and Dundalk by a long way need the biggest shove along. If this is done, is a corporate/financial success and creates a model that works then I think others could follow suit, even urban planners could be swayed. Self financing in the past was looking for 30,000 (Drogheda Utd) mixed housing units to go with the new ground, this variation would have such a smaller footprint et al so ye could see it work. Urban regeneration are the buzz word these days and taking a potential 12k people in to an urban centre regularly is a much easier sell than trying to manage a potential 100k permanent residents in an area ala Drogheda plan. Win win for Kelleher as he would be pretty free to redevelop Richmond Park as he wishes which returns his funding of Pats over the years and he achieves what is probably his end game all along without destroying the club.

    Athlone Town.

"The board of management of Athlone Town AFC is delighted with today's High Court ruling in the club's favour by Mr Justice Richard Humphreys. The dispute centred around the club's plans to have an astroturf pitch installed at Athlone Town Stadium."

Note that this would be a training facility, not the main pitch.

"Athlone Town AFC have welcomed a High Court ruling, which will allow them to access a €200,000 Sports Capital grant to develop an astro-turf training facility adjacent to Athlone Town Stadium at Lissywollen.

Town say they’ll now be able save money as it’ll reduce the need to rent other facilities for training their senior and underage teams while also providing a revenue stream by renting its use to other ‘interested parties’."

Nearly every LOI side have these revenue streams these days.Athlone have to go to the high court to get there's up and running.Bad sign.

Where exactly will this pitch go? Who was preventing them from putting it in?

there's a training pitch behind the goals of the main ground - the end furthest from the turnstiles, so must be a replacement for that.
