    Aldo and the FAI

    What's this all about ?

    http://www.fai.ie/article009.html

I had heard Aldo complaining that he wasn't interviewed but then again it was in the Evening Herald so who knows. Was there some retraction by Aldo recently ?

Yeah. His agent came out with a statement saying there was never an interview arranged. I can't remember what he said but something was marked down for December/January. Aldridge got the wrong end of the stick.

I read aldo's article in the herald and basically his agent is being blamed for the mess. Or at least, what Aldo thought and what his agent thought were two seperate things.

Well fair play for him for clearing it up publicly. At least he won't have burnt any bridges for anything in the future.....

It does seem strange though that no appointment had ever been set up with Aldridge. At the risk of repeating myself, he would have brought more to the table than Staunton. Why also would his agent allege that a meeting had been arranged if there never was one ? Is Aldo trying to retract statements made in the heat of battle and not wanting to burn his bridges ?

    Strange one this...

My guess is that Delaney, having had first hand experience of dealing with Staunton (player negotiations, Saipan etc., spending time with the squad during WC02) was impressed by Staunton's personal traits. AFAIK Delaney & Aldo have probably never even met so Aldo was already at a disadvantage. Delaney probably thought years ago that Staunton was management material. As CEO or whatever he is, Delaney's entitled to make his choice.

think this one was another herald make up story out of nothing. aldo writes for them so will be interesting if he keeps that up after them making a sensational story out of nothing at his expense. what we've come to expect from the herald i suppose. if it wasnt for the junior soccer supplement on a monday the paper wouldnt have any reason for existing

So do you think it was always going to be Staunton from the day Kerr's contract wasn't renewed (or possibly before)? If so, why did it take so long ? Do we know if anyone else was actually interviewed for the job ?

I wouldn't go that far, but I'd say Staunton was always Delaney's no. 1 contingency if O'Neill wouldn't commit. I heard rumours of a meeting with Ranieri but unsubstantiated.

With the agent's clarification does that mean we retract the bullit from Delaney or just leave it in there in lieu of a future misconduct?

I don't think so. Aldo wrote the two pieces himself. I think he was genuinely p'd off.

Aldo will still be applying for the Ireland job in 2010. If hes serious about you'd think he'd try to add something to his CV for next attempt? like maybe some experience beyond Tranmere?

If the performances aren't up to scratch in the Euro qualifying group, the job may be vacant well before 2010. There will be a very short honeymoon period for Stan.

True, but there's a stadium to be paid for and buying out his contract would cost 800,000 euro.

I cant see this Ireland team getting totally whitewashed so I would say he will get the extra two years. As well as that we always do well against the big teams(in terms of performance) and we are guaranteed to get a couple of em in the draw. expect a couple of moral victories to keep him in a job.

Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
