Former soccer star George Best is in intensive care, doctors said today.
The 59-year-old is being treated at the private Cromwell Hospital in west London.
A hospital spokesman confirmed Best had been admitted to the intensive care unit but said no further details were available at present.
Looks like Georgie has fcuked up some other guy's liver now
I heard on the radio it was a serious kidney infection so it might be totally unrelated.
I think that he has had a bad reaction to the drugs he is taking to help cut the cravings for the booze thus they have affected his kidneys.
What was he doing in London anyway?Does he not have a country to run .ie. USA.Typical Bush....

It's pretty sickening the way the papers have been in such a rush to kill off George. Like with the Liam Lawlor story they'd rather rush a false story in to print than check their facts and potentially miss out on a "scoop".Originally Posted by ccfcman
I'm just dreading what might happen if Martin O'Neill's wife takes a turn for the worse. The indications are that the FAI might delay naming a new manager while they wait to see how the O'Neill situation "develops", i.e. whether his wife recovers/dies.

Severe infection is 'big setback' for Best

Football legend George Best has suffered a “big setback” in his battle to recover from illness in hospital, the doctor treating him said today.
Professor Roger Williams said Best, 59, had a “new and severe infection”.
The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star was admitted to Cromwell Hospital in west London last month where his condition deteriorated and he was taken to intensive care.
Until recently he had been improving but he has now taken a turn for the worse, Professor Williams said.
Outside the hospital he said: “Mr Best is not so well. He has been admitted back to intensive care. He has got a new and severe infection.
“He is on dialysis and he is very poorly at the moment. He was improving every day until yesterday afternoon and he was really pretty good.
“He was maintaining some progress each day and now he has acquired another infection as these patients are very susceptible to infection at this stage of recovery.”
Best’s infection is causing problems “with kidneys and everything else again”.
He added: “His breathing is OK. He is having oxygen but he is not on a ventilator.
“It is a big setback after some steady progress over the last two weeks.”
Professor Williams said he did not know how long Best would be in intensive care but he had a team of doctors with him and his girlfriend and his manager were both at the hospital today.
He added: “He is conscious and just about talking. He was admitted at about 6am this morning from a ward upstairs.
“He is eating and was making good progress but we are all very disturbed at a sudden setback like this.”
The professor said he was hoping the infection would respond to antibiotics.
“We are not sure where the infection is. There are so many places it could be,” he said.
Asked if the current infection was life threatening, he said: “He is very ill at the minute so we’ll see how it goes during the day.”

Former football star George Best has been put on a life-support machine, a hospital spokesman has said.
Doctors at Cromwell Hospital in London said the 59-year-old was stable in the intensive care unit after being on the machine since Friday.
"We are following all medical avenues to try to keep him stable," Dr Akeel Alisa said.
A hospital spokesman said Best was suffering from a lung infection, and that his condition was "serious".

George Best's hours 'are numbered'

Football legend George Best is “coming to the end of the long road of his ill-health”, his doctor said today.
Professor Roger Williams warned that Best, 59, could die at any time.
“He’s still alive, he’s still having standard medical care and treatment but I have to tell that his hours are numbered now,” he said.
Prof Williams added: "I would be very surprised if he survives another 24 hours.''
Best is being treated in the intensive care unit at the private Cromwell Hospital, west London, after he suffered a lung infection.
Overnight his condition deteriorated and there is no longer anything doctors can do, Prof Williams said.
Clearly upset Prof Williams, who has been overseeing Best’s treatment, told reporters outside the hospital: “It’s the final stage of this illness and I am afraid he could die at any time over the next 24 hours.”
Best’s son Calum, 24, his father Dickie, 87, and other family members were at his bedside, but he was no longer conscious or aware of what was happening.
The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star had a controversial liver transplant in 2002 after his existing liver failed following years of alcohol abuse.
Best, who ignored pleas to stay off the booze after the operation, was admitted to the hospital on October 1 suffering from a flu-like infection.
His health deteriorated rapidly when he developed a kidney infection but he then rallied and his condition was thought to be improving until the early hours of Friday when he suffered a severe setback.
He developed a lung infection and was put back on a ventilator in intensive care but remained alert.
However, his condition worsened again on Tuesday night.
