Celtic's O'Brien may opt for Ireland
CELTIC'S Youth Cup Final hero Jim O'Brien could follow in the footsteps
of
Aiden McGeady by opting to play for Ireland.
The Scots-born winger, who scored both goals in the Hoops' 2-0 win over
St
Mirren at Hampden on Wednesday, qualifies for Ireland through a
grandparent.
He was on standby to join Ireland's under-19 squad for their UEFA
Championship qualifying matches in Serbia, although Scotland youth coach
Tommy Wilson has assured the 18-year-old he is still in his plans.
"Jim has already played for our Under-17s and will definitely be in the
reckoning for next year's under-19s," said Wilson.
"It was only last month that I became aware of Ireland's interest in
him.
The decision will be up to him and his family."
Jesus, Aiden will have the whole of the Celtic youth's playing for us within 5 years.
O'Brien:
"Aiden is a pal; he hangs about with us at Parkhead and goes to lunch with us all.
"It’s great to see him on the park for the first team and you say, ’that’s Aiden, I was talking to him 10 minutes ago!’
“Everyone was gob smacked with his performances against AC Milan in the Champions League and we were all saying if he can do it then hopefully so can we. We just need to push on and practise every day. But that’s in the long term. In the short term I just want to get games under my belt."
