    Harding Cup

The College's cup competition, the Harding Cup is in Trinity this year. Anyone got any news on the teams, players, who to look out for etc.?

When it starts I should be able to post updates and scores each day.

Well UCD usually enter it Larry as do the hosts, UCC NUIG and most of the major Universities. U.C.D. enter their freshman team which is students in their first academic year in the College as do most of the other universities.
We will have some players who may feature in the Under 21's during the 2005 season. But as for names I will have to wait till closer to the time.
When is it starting by the way?

This mornings quarter finals in the HARDING CUP got under way at 11am. Two very exciting games were played out
between the four teams comprising of 1st year University squads.

UCC beat Queens 3-2 with the winner coming from the penalty spot with just 2 minutes remaining. Paul Johnson took on his
role as captain to slot away the winner. Stevie Horan and Chris Wasson were on the score sheet for Queens with Padraig
O’Brien (7) and Sean Henaghan (51) being the other scorers for the Munster side.

In the other quarter final UCD beat last year's winners NUIG 2-0. Paul Byrne scored first just after the half-hour mark and
Conor Salmon made sure of the victory in the 80th minute. UCD must now await the afternoon session to see who they will
meet in the semi-final. They will meet the winners of DU v UUJ ( 2pm DU playing Fields, Santry)

The losers from today's games go on the contest the Plate competition, the final of which will be played on Sunday

    Harding Cup Results

    Plate Final Queen's 1 Trinity 0

    Cup Final U.C.D. 6 U.C.C.0 U.C.C. player red carded
    Paul Byrne 4 mins
    Conor Sammon 24,75,89 mins

U.C.D. won the 2005 Harding Cup bringing the Cup back to Belfield for only the second time this century. A hat-trick for Conor Sammon was completed in the second half. Paul Byrne opened the scoring early on and Conor Sammon, Ciaran Harte and Brian Shorthall all scored in the first period to leave the half-time score 4-0. With the game effectively over U.C.C.'s cause was not helped when one of their midfielders was sent off for throwing a fist on the hour mark. U.C.D. made it 5-0 on 75 minutes when Sammon grabbed his second of the game and he completed his hat-trick a minute from time.

Good win for UCD and well deserved. Paul Byrne (UCD) picks up player of the tournement.

Btw, the Queens goal in the Plate came straight from a corner played at a wind-swept Santry
