And thus the Fergal Coleman idea sprung to my mind. IMO this guy did a good deal for Longford in a short spell. In particular I remember him scoring a goal in Monaghan and we hadn't a chance in hitting a barn door that day. He wasn't our best ever player but he gave his best. Six goals.

The curious fact about Fergal Coleman was that he cost Ir£10-11,000 in a transfer fee between Galway United and Drogheda United some years before he joined Longford. Admittedly he would frustrate you something savage on days, but certainly scored some key goals.
from what i can recall of him he certainly was decentenough a great headerer of the ball and was such a hard worker is he still in the far east teaching?

Fergal Coleman began his career at U.C.D. In one of his first games he played against Celtic in a friendly in Belfield Park in July 1992. He broke through went one on one against Packie Bonner and lost his nerve. Had he scored that day he would have broken scoring records at the club. As things turned out he struggled to make the first team on a regular basis and eventually joined our graduate club Pegasus. It was from this club that he joined Galway United. The rest you know. Thought this might fill in the gaps on his career for ye.
I remeber the Galway game away, everyone shouting to get him off the pitch, he was having a stinker, but whatta you know, 2 goals. Fans didn't know whether to laugh or cry!
Yeah i remember the Galway match that night.How important was that.I think Dundalk beat Derry 4 - 1 that night and really kept the pressure on us.Fergie wasn't a whole lot of addition although he did score some vital goals and when Reynolds got sent off in Ballybofey Fergie dropped back to the centre of midfield and did well.Had a few pints with him after the game and he was a nice guy and glad of his contribution as he was quite upset with some of the abuse he was getting from the fans.He's out in South Korea teaching English now.Not to surprised his soccer career didn't take off but a really nice bloke who helped us out of a spot.

I've this niggling thought that we actually signed him as a centre half, and then pushed him forward one of the games we were chasing. Am I just imagining that? It was during my Buckfast Years afterall

martin lawlor signed him for us for a big fee. started bright enough, but keepers pulled off a string of top draw saves to stop him getting his first goal, the crowd then started to get on his back, and the confidence literally drained out of him. eventually he scored after about 15 or 20 matches - a last min winner against you lot if memory serves me right!! i joked about 5 games in tony bird at the drogs, that he was the new fergal coleman, cos he just couldn't score his first goal - but at least fergal scored a few before he left us.
he worked with or was business partner with lawlor, so it was no surprise when he appeared again for you lot under lawlor, at least he seemed to score for you.

Yes, Kenny signed him, I remember him going on about the physical presence he would provide..signed around the same time as Greg O'Halloran I think
