    Past And Present?

[MOD EDIT: Please link to sources. --adam]

i found this a very insteresting article written in the aftermath of irelands 2-1 defeat to scotland in May 2000.

"It is hard to know what lessons McCarthy learned from this pointless game apart from debuts for Stephen McPhail and Dominic Foley. His finishing line-up of Alan Kelly in goal and Babb, Richard Dunne, Stephen Carr and Terry Phelan in front of him; Jason McAteer, Kevin Kilbane, Damien Duff and Steve Finnan in midfield; and Robbie Keane and Dominic Foley could only be called a 'B' team at best."

6 out of that side one awful night nearly 5 years ago are now providing our hopes for qualification in 2006.... o how peoples minds and opinions change! It was also called Unrecognisable Irish beaten by Scotland!

Are you sure McAteer, Babb & Phelan played in an Ireland B team in 2000 ???

Surely Phelan had long since retired?

No, it was compared to a b team.

In fairness 4 years is a long time with young players like duff, keane etc.

    Unfortunately attended that game.

Mark Kennedy gave ROI the lead very early on from a free kick. Scotland led by half-time, and comfortably held on. A very poor performance.

First home defeat in almost 40 years against the Scots - since May 1961, in fact

    Scotland 2 (Burley, Ferguson)

Subs: Damien Duff (Blackburn) for Kennedy 61 mins, Terry Phelan (Fulham) for McPhail 61 mins, Richard Dunne (Everton) for Breen 77 mins, Dominic Foley (Watford) for Quinn 77 mins

    Manager: Mick McCarthy

You'd have thought so, but no. The great man came on as a sub to a raucous cacophony of jeering from the Irish crowd. Shrugged it off and embarked on a couple of his trademark thundering touchline runs (can't quite recall if he was anywhere near the ball, but it was always a joy to see Terence in full flow). Sadly this meaningless cameo in a miserable defeat was Phelan's last appearance in an Irish shirt. For shame.

I can't remember a thing about that game, I thought I would have remembered getting beat by the Scots as well as debuts by the likes of McPhail. I was away that summer, was it on then? Jaysis, Terry Phelan in an Ireland shirt. I honestly thought McCarthy had got rid of him long before that. Was Phelan all that bad? Sorry, my memory of him is in 1993-4, playing a couple of stormers, he was highly rated at one stage? It's discomforting to think of how clear my memory was before I started college.

I clearly remember Don Hutchinson's embarrassing nutmeg of Phil Babb for one of Scotland's goals. Getting nutmegged by Ronaldo might be excusable but Don Hutchinson?

    just curious

Whereas a lot of that irish team have become international regulars virtually the whole scottish team is gone now which might explain their demise.

I remember that game. Or rather I remember catching the last ten minutes before heading out to a party, getting completely drunk and hailing a taxi my lying down in the middle of the road... Well, technically I was told that last in work the next day...

Funny how you remember things at times!

Ah now, lay off Hutchison! Sure didn't he score the only goal for Scotland in Wembley the previous year in a Euro 2000 play-off?! Granted they'd lost 2-0 in Scotland, but an honorary Irishman nonetheless!
