    Kyle injured - Elliott in?

Sunderland's Kevin Kyle is out for 3 months, looks like Elliott could be given an extended run in the first team a lot earlier than anyone expected. With 3 goals in 7 games already, he's looking as good as we expected!

    And only 2 starts.

I didn't know Kyle was out for so long. The Elliott-Steward partnership got 4 goals on Saturday away from home (Elliott assisted 2 of Steward's AFAIK). McCarthy will definitely bring someone in though, division 1/2/3 clubs can buy players in England all year.

Think Tommy Smith is injured at the moment but I could be wrong. Anyhow, Smith has failed to rediscover the form that he showed with Watford in his early days. Elliot looks like a real gem. 3 goals from 7, only 2 starts is very impressive. Looks like the most natural goalscorer we have had in a long time. He's been more prolific than David Connolly and Alan Lee who are in the same division. I'm not saying he deserves a call-up but his start to the season could be compared to Robbie Keane's first season with Wolves in 1997-98.

No, he's gone to Derby County. Sack of **** in any case. Elliott's got a green light to establish himself in the first team. Let's hope he does.

I just noticed today that Sunderland loaned striker Simon Johnson last week but Elliott should still be first choice.

Extracts from Sunderland match report tonight:

Marcus Stewart, whose hat-trick at the Priestfield Stadium took his goals tally for the season to six goals, again partnered Stephen Elliott. It meant loan signing Simon Johnson had to settle for a place on the bench.

Elliott, who grabbed his third goal of the season then, had the game's first effort, a header that flew well wide, but it wasn't long until the Black Cats took the lead.

It put a massive dent in Forest's bid to claim a first win of the season and Elliott nearly made things worse for the away side in the 14th minute when his left-foot shot was saved by Gerrard.

Elliott, who has looked the part since replacing Kevin Kyle, was again in the thick of the action in the 20th minute. This time his shot took a deflection before being gathered by the Forest keeper.

It was backs-to-the-wall stuff for Kinnear's men. George McCartney, who was the provider for three of Sunderland's goals at Gillingham, sent in a low cross in the 21st minute but Stewart and Elliott got their wires crossed and the danger was cleared.

Moments later, the linesman was an unpopular figure when he flagged Elliott offside after a great move by Sunderland who were in total control in the opening period.

Elliott went close to sealing for Sunderland in the 56th minute when his shot from close range was deflected wide; and from the resulting corner Wright headed just over.

Elliott was a constant menace to Forest's back-four and he had a penalty shout turned down in the 64th minute after a great turn on the edge of the area.

The Sunderland manager introduced Johnson for Elliott in the 70th minute and the little striker left the field to a standing ovation.

Sounds like he had a good match.

Elliott took his goal well in Berne too - real poachers goal as the keeper spilled a shot.

Thought he was disappointing in general play though as the U21s turned in their worst performance for some time.

Hoping for better things in Troyes. great to see him get a run at Sunderland.

5 goals in eight games now for Stephen Elliot. He has only started 4 of those games. They're talking about him as the new Kevin Phillips. He may be exactly what Ireland needs - a goal poacher.
