    VAT reduction on sporting events

A rare spot of good financial news for LOI clubs (and the FAI I guess).

In today's jobs initiative, the government have announced they'll reduce the rate of VAT on admission to sporting events from 13.5% to 9%. I don't have the full details as I joined the stream late, but that seems to be the basic principle.

It won't affect matchday ticket prices (more likely it would allow clubs to offer better season ticket discounts), but it will at least improve the clubs' margins by around 4%. There are also reductions in tourism and travel VAT which could potentially help attract more away fans to European games here.

It seems you're right, actually. I'm surprised by that. Disregard this thread then!
