    England 2-3 Rep of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland represented by players from the eircom League aged under 21 defeated England by three goals to two in the Four Nation Tournament Tuesday evening in a highly competitive game at Princess Royal Park, Banff to avenge last years 4-0 loss.

Ireland went behind after five minutes when Gary Thompson latched on to a quickly-taken free-kick on the right and crossed to England captain Steve Guinan who slotted home from six yards.

England right-full back Peter Cavanagh was replaced by James Sedgemore after 13 minutes and six minutes later Ireland equalised through John Flood.

The England defence failed to clear a Gerard Rowe cross after a good lay-off from Eamon Zayed. The ball came back to Zayed who did well to beat full-back David Perkins to cross to Flood in the six-yard box. England 'keeper Matt Baker could only parry his initial header and the diving Flood headed the rebound past Baker at the second attempt.

Second half goals in the 60th and 62nd minutes from Eamon Zayed and Galway United's John Russell saw the Boys in Green take a two goal lead before Guinan pulled one back.

McDermott and Rowe certinaly are reserves. Houlihan was in the original squad but wa swithdrawn, if Shels felt they needed those two while they were gone they probably would have done the same.

Can't get you an exact figure, but he would have started pretty much every league game this season.
