    Mervue

A scintillating first half performance from the Youths tonight secured all three points against a Mervue side which were fine going forward but very porous at the back. Youths started Packie, Martin, Anto, Wolfie, Gareth, Ben Ryan, Greg, Shane D, Deano and Danny and Gary up front. Wexford started reasonably well but conceded with Mervue's first attack when a cross from the left found the Mervue attacker in the clear and he pushed in the rebound from close range after Packie had done very well to keep the first shot out. Wexford then went on the attack and both Danny and Deano had free headers, neither on target while Gareth had a shot deflected for a corner. Wexford's equaliser then came about midway through the half when Shane's freekick from thirty yards caught the Mervue keeper out badly at his near post for one-all.

Wexford's second then followed when Gary got clear on the right and his low cross was bundled home by Danny to make it two-one. A long throw from Deano then found its way beyond the far post for Ben to volley home from about ten out to make it three-one. Wexford's fourth was a mirror-image of the second with Danny getting free on the left and his low cross was easily slotted home by Gary to make it four-one at half-time.

Second-half was a bit anticlimactic after that and wasn't helped when the Mervue no. 8 got a straight red for a studs up attempted block on Greg's clearance. Don't think there was too much contact and seemed a bit harsh. Gary then got taken out blatantly for a peno which was not given and subsequently missed a sitter from another low cross by Danny from the right before Mervue got a second when a freekick was lobbed from the far post over Packie to the other post where a Mervue forward had an easy tap-in. Gary then got a deserved second for five-two when he waltzed through the middle of the Mervue defence and neatly pushed it past the keeper. A few clever attempted chips of the keeper from Shane closed the match out.

Late subs for Wexford were Ciaran Hennelly (?) for Ben, Kevin Rowe for Deano and Pa Doyle in place of Packie. Comfortable win in the end with Youths looking very strong up front with Danny and Gary and Mervue's best player also being their attacker, Rory Gaffney to make it an entertaining game overall.

Hopefully we'll hold on to seventh now, that would be a decent season

Cornflakes, would be happy with that starting with at least a point against the Mons on Friday.
