Sea the Stars should be in the individual catagory

He would be a close second to certainty O'Driscoll against that field !

How in the name of god is the Irish soccer team not on the short list?

For frick sake, the A1GP team and Cork Ladies??? Give me a break. The performance in Paris alone merits being ahead of those jokers.

No footballer in the nominees for the sports person of the year either

    shambles
Ridiculous. The Irish soccer team have done nothing this year. They put in one decent performance in 2009 and that merits a place in the best team of the year.

I think a bit of perspective is needed here also...Maybe the Irish team dont deserve to win the award but i think some of the negative comments here are shocking..to belittle an unbeaten campaign by saying "4 wins and 6 draws etc" in a group which included the World Champions is unfair...

Ireland is a country of four million people where soccer(unfortunatly) is now possibly the 4th most popular sport..we were eventually knocked out by a country of 65million plus people where soccer is number 1...we came 2nd in a group where 2 teams had a much stronger pedigree in the game than us from countries with larger populations and structures in the game...even Georgia has a slightly higher population and i assume soccer is the number 1 sport there or certainly in the top 2...

We have to get real..this expectation to qualify for every major tournament is unrealistic so therfore the negativity and bad press when we dont is bulls*it!!..we were 3rd seeds in that group for a reason..
as much as i wish these were not the facts..THEY ARE.

Im hugely proud of the team for there efforts this campaign and for getting so close..then again i've been hugely proud of the team for 20+ years i've been going to matches regardless of results...and i will be for the rest of my life following them because its My country in MY sport.

As for the rest of the list...

Both the Irish and Leinster teams reached the summit of their sports so you cant argue with that..
Bohs certainly played the best football in the LOI.
Sea the Stars is a phenomenon who really deserves to be recognised..
Dont know much about A1GP team but believe they won so fair play...
Dont know anything about GAA so cant comment really.

an irish team that less than a month ago was deemed SO worthy of a place at the greatest sporting tournament on earth that most of you guys were in handball-induced-hysterics screaming conspiracy and injustice on here is now considered by the same guys to be a failure who have achieved nothing that merits recognition (not even more worthy of a nomination than the cork ladies)

some amount of hypocrites around here

To reiterate everyone's point to you again..........Did Ireland win? No Did the Cork Ladies win? Yes

If they qualified they would be nominated. Would they win? Christ no! If they were nominated now would they win? Not in a million years!

Get over it. Everyone whose there deserves to be nominated....FACT!

I reckon your just a sexist buddy.

Id fancy Rory Mclroy to win both the RTE and the BBC awards in the next 5 years. Has this been done before does anyone know? Might be worth putting a 10er on it.....

Give it a break. The Irish soccer team did not achieve anything this year. Maybe we should have a get together in Phoenix Park with Joe Duffy.
Consider this the Munster Rugby team actually won their domestic league and got to a European Semi-Final and they were not mentioned.

Ya but in fairness thats seen as a failure of a season for Munster. Its like Kerry winning the national league and being knocked out in the semis of the championship.

For the 2009 calander year it absolutely does in terms of success. Its not like I mentioned draws at home to Bulgaria or Montenegro

Regardless of the merits, you need to calm down if this is you level of incredulity at a poxy RTE award...
