I have no problem with foreign born players declaring for us provided it's for the right reasons...Kilbane and StLeger type players who always wanted to play for us.

The problem I have are freeloaders who if we qualify will jump on the bandwagon to get to a World Cup. I expect to see a few of these imerge if we do and If so I hope the management have the foresight to cop these.

Just another point, at this stage Kieron Westwood has yet to play a competitive game for us. Just say we dont qualify and given Englands lack of a top class goalkeeper. Just say he got an england call up... what do you think he might do?

He'd be ineligible as he has caps for Ireland.

    Jamie O'Hara isn't a left back, he's a central midfielder

Nonetheless, we are short in that position too, so I'd take him. I actually have no problem with him in the team. The weird thing is he was called up to England under 21s when we played them. He didn't play but he was in the squad. Kevin Nolan is a goalscoring central midfielder but we already have Glenn Whelan.... I don't think he is capable of the kind of goal Whelan scored last Saturday, but I would still have him in the squad, if he wants to join us. Lets face it, most of the players we had in the 90s would have played for England had they been selected but they weren't and we were second choice. Senna, Deco and Eduardo all play for the countries they do cos they decided they would never get such regular action with Brazil and no-one questions their international motivation. I'd have them in the squad ans certainly wouldn't let that count against them.
    Superdave to the resc....

My own take on this is that Trap feels we can't beat a top side with the squad we have now and so he must make some adjustments and pronto. No point recruiting after the play-offs. Do it now. And as he has shown with players like St Ledger & Lawerence he will throw them in if he feels they are better than what we have now. This guy is determined to get to the World Cup come what may. And if that means upsetting people by recruiting people like Nolan I doubt he will bat an eyelid (and I fully understand peoples feelings about giving someone a cap who likes Guinness). He sent the message out today for people to digest before the first play off game. I would not be at all surprised if Nolan or O'Hara lined up on November 14th (especailly if their are any injuries).

Yeah, I'm aware of that - but it was a friendly. Can he still change his mind?

No competitive appearances though. With the recent rule changes he could still play for England in theory.

Feel a bit squeamish about this but one thing is for sure, Wednesday night opened Trap's eyes to some serious defincies. With Rowlands ruled out (and possibly played out anyway) and Miller not the right calibre, he's looking for some proven quality who can slot straight in.

You make a good point. We have somebody in Manchester who needs serious therapy not wanting to play for his country. And then we have English/Irish guys wanting to play for us.

agreed. To do this, if it proves to be the case, at this late stage leaves a sour taste in my mouth. 3 guys who have each in their own way turned us down already... the mind boggles.

The only way any of these three guys make it into the playoff squads are if we are hit by major injuries in the next three weeks. They won't make their debuts until after the World Cup, should we qualify.

I'm all for them playing, by the way.

Disappointing to see this from Trap. I dont think we should look at players who qualify through parents/grandparents when players like Fahey and Reid aren't being considered.

    What about Matt Derbyshire?

Think he is married to an Irish girl, that would qualify him for a passport?

He would be a great option for up front!!

I think the difference in this scenario is that we're basically dealing with failed English internationals giving up on their chosen nation because they know they haven't a chance & throwing their lot into a convenient "second" country.

It's not like they haven't existed before in Irish international football, but just because the laws of the game now make it easier for these potential turncoats to change their mind, doesn't mean we should rub our hands and go "oh goody!".

Not every plastic paddy turns out to be a Andy Townsend who sweats blood for the cause. Many, if not most, turn out to be journeymen just trying to boost their club careers.
