Fantastic, and you can be damn sure Maradona got an awful lot better service than Keano

Banana plants "walk". If you're planting a field of banana plants you have to leave room at one end of the field to allow room for their movement or "walking".

I was only a kid when Maradona was playing, and only followed the national team, so I barely remember him playing. I've always assumed he must have been playing deeper - more involved in build-up play, that he had a few prolific team-mates he spread the goal tally with, that he just didn't really give a damn outside of major tournaments, or that drugs and psychological factors made him sublimely inconsistent. Oh, and I know he regularly got the **** kicked out of him by man markers told to do just that. His reputation isn't really reflected in his goal tally, which is merely very good. Perhaps one of the white haired chaps on here can shed some light on it.

Odd. Every clip I've ever seen of him has had him up front. Granted, most of said clips are goals - but I mean he's often the furthest forward long before he gets the ball. I also understood that he played lone striker at Napoli. I'd pretty much assumed he'd played as a secundo punta (English needs a better word for this. I refuse to credit it to Teddy Sheringham).

Described as an attacking midfielder/second striker in wikipedia.
The goal he is remembered for against England was picked up inside his own half.

Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.

The french call the position "le numero dix" which I think is great. Careca played as the out'n'out striker for Napoli during the majority of Maradona's time

I was being a little flippant though. He played in a very similar role to the role Zidane played for France. Deeper than say, Bergkamp's role, but further than the classic midfield role. Obviously though he was given license to roam and find space wherever he could.

In later years, he dropped deeper.

By the way, Dodge, the Italians call that position the trequartista (the three-quarterist), which I rather like.

    Good one.

Apparantly the Italians have about 20 words to describe midfilders whereas if you listen to a UK or Irish pundit you'll be lucky to hear 2 - holding and attacking! Just shows the difference in understanding.

Stutts, I think you are being a little harsh... I always had a soft spot for the "In the Hole" role
