Kes - one of the saddest movies one will ever see - a classic
Kes - 1969
Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother, Billy Casper (David Bradley), a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. Helped and encouraged by his English teacher Mr. Farthing (Colin Welland) and his fellow students, Billy finally finds a positive purpose to his unhappy existence, until tragedy strikes.

Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
Richard returns home from military service to a small town in the Midlands. He has one thing on his mind: revenge. Payback for the local bullies who did some very bad things to his brother. At first his campaign employs guerrilla tactics, designed to frighten the men and put them ill at ease. But then he steps up his operation, and one by one these local tough guys are picked off by the terrifying angel of vengeance that Richard has become.
Haven't seen that yet. Looks good as it well made, the story is a bit mad i'd say, well worth a look though.

Should I watch Kes? Someone in my house got the DVD a while back and it's been sitting there for ages gathering dust. Any good?
It's interesting anyway. I'm not really one for sentimental films.
Get Carter is my favourite English film. Michael Caine is brilliant in it.
Also, Lock Stock and Snatch are two crackers.

Mi mamá me hizo guapo, listo y antimadridista.
The Ladykillers(the original) is marvellous with a great turn by Alec Guinness.
For something gritty make sure you get a copy of The Hill, with Sean Connery, giving the most credible performance of his career. Its about a milatary prison during the second World War, and features a very convincing sadistic prison officer called Williams who seems to find cruelty to the inmates an enjoyable pasttime.

I would recommend Brighton Rock with Richard Attenborough and I think William Hartnell (1st Dr Who) - gritty b/w small town crook drama
Yeah, definitely a window into how society was back then (not all the long ago either when you think about it). Its not Hollywood and doesn't have one special effect, i suppose you'd describe it as a low budget simply because they didn't have to spend a fortune. Its all about the story and i would be saying 'its a must see' film. If its there then yeah, definitely watch it.

"Some weeks the lady is good looking and some weeks they're not. Our performance today would have been not the best looking bird but at least we got her in the taxi". - Ian Holloway
Withnail reminded me of this one.
Another absolutely cracking film from the 80s,
Rita, Sue & Bob Too
One of the best lines ever at the end of that clip, involves yer man Kulvinder Ghir from Goodness Gracious Me.
"I can't help being a Paki!"
"Yes you f**king can!"

Absolutely. Great Stuff.
I liked Dead Mans Shoes,(Paddy Considine is excellent) but thought the ending was a bit of a let down. Another couple of good Ken Loach films are Riff Raff (The scene with Ricky Tomlinson in the bath ) and Raining Stones. The Long Good Friday with Bob Hoskins is a classic English gangster film. Quadrophenia is pretty good too (classic Phil Daniels bit when Leslie Ash tells him that their shag in a back yard meant nothing - "It did to ****ing me") English films are at their best when they're more gritty and downbeat than (most) Hollywood films.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.
How do you post a youtube video link?
Agree with TonyD Hollywod films are far too polished.(Actors playing a homeless person and they have perfect teeth)

I hate the motive for films, to cash in .... Pirates of the Caribbean, yeah right .... how many of them are there? Brutal stuff, from a template and only made to make money.Agree with TonyD Hollywod films are far too polished.(Actors playing a homeless person and they have perfect teeth)
