Any idea what year that could be from?
It's 1937, Free State Cup. Original link was on this site but doesn't seem to be there anymore.
Life without Rovers, it makes no sense...it's a heartache...nothing but a fools game. S.R.F.C.
It looks like the Iveagh Grounds in Crumlin, where St James' Gate played their games. Havent been there in years (93/94 season maybe) but it looked the same then as it does in the video there, a stand on one side and totally open on the others. There was a pitch & putt course on the side opposite the main stand if memory serves me right! Also we werent allowed into the stand as it was a no go area.
They must of flogged that stand to Longford looks like the one in flancare.
Great to see that footage. Fair play ARooney
1937 Free State Cup, just shows how far weve come
A lot of clubs have come and gone
But were still alive and punching above our weight.
We have such a rich tradition
something a lot of LOI clubs can only dream of
Believe it to be 1936/37 Quarter final St James 6-2 Sligo Rovers. Sunday 7 February 1937. Sligo finished Champions and St James Gate lost the final 1-2 to Waterford.
A possible indication to the size of the crowd is that 2 years earlier 1934/35 they met in Rnd 1 at the Iveagh Grounds and according to Joe Molloys History of SRFC there were 16000 at game in Dublin (1-1) Rovers won replay 3-1.
