    Was it the yougest team?

This is an extract from an article on the Wexford Youths website with a sub title of "Did Wexford also field the youngest ever team in League of Ireland history in the process?"

I am just curious to know was it the youngest team fielded in LOI history with an average of 21 or how far away it is from being the youngest team.

"The Wexford Youths FC team that started against Monaghan United and Cork City is below, with the players' age in brackets.
Pa Doyle (19); Johnny Flynn-O'Connor (23), Paul Rossiter (20), Conor Wallace (18); Keith Kearney (19); Paul Malone (22); Gavin Doyle (24); C Sinnott (22); Richie Fitzgerald (22); Danny Furlong (18); Paul Murphy (23) (Gareth Wallace, sub 86 mins, (16).
    Average age 21"

'Wexford Youths' is an incredibly accurate name for that club.

Does he get kicked out when he reaches 25?

In a word 'no'... circa 1974 Rovers signed up the entire Cherry Orchard u/18 team and Johnny Fulham from Bohs and played them in the league the following season.... even allowing for the fact that Fulham was in his mid 30's the Rovers side's average age was younger.

UCD have usually had one or two old heads in the squad, but if they were injured, we could well have had an equally young team (especially in the League Cup with a reserve team).

On a side note, anyone else spot the similarity between Wexford shocking Cork and us shocking Shels in the League Cup semi?

He should get kicked out anyway because he's our only player not from Wexford! I think he's from somewhere around Arklow. It might not be the youngest team ever but that's probably the youngest side we've put out yet. Our captain Anthony Russell is the oldest regular at 26.

I'm pretty sure Richie Fitzgerald is originally from Kilkenny too.

I thought Anto Russell was older than 26?

The next problem we're going to face is how to keep hold of them when teams come offering semi-pro or pro contracts?
With so much attention being focused on them now a few of them are bound to get offers.

There is a good article about Wexford in today's Irish Star. Fantastic quote from Mick Wallace when asked did his side celebrate Monday night's League Cup victory over Cork. He said " We had a drink to celebrate a famous night but we have a massive game against Athlone on Friday and we've never won three games in a row so we need to focus on it. We were back on the bus early enough, but sure half of my lads wouldn't be served or let into a nightclub anyway"

I'd say Don O'Riordans teams from the early 2000s would have been contenders for that title

I thought it would not have been the youngest but to be honest would have thought UCD rather than Rovers but good to know thanks for the info

Thats only a good thing sure. Hold onto that squad and in a few years time Wexford will be a force to reckon with I think.

Easier said than done though. We'd have a few league titles to our credit if we could hold on to everyone we've had.

I think our team against Dundalk in the cup last season had an average age of 20.

    Team last year vs Dundalk:

    D Quigley- 21
    B Shortall- 22
    I Bermingham- 18
    C Kenna- 22
    G Bolger- 18
    B King- 20
    S Fitz- 20
    S McFaul- 21
    C Sammon- 20
    R Finn- 19
    D Doyle- 21

    Average age of 20!

I'm sure we've had similar or possible younger for League Cup games.

Also didn't Wexford field a good few 16 year olds in an earlier round of the League Cup? Be interesting to see the average age of that team.

The problem with that, as I see it, is that the squad of young lads is unlikely to stay together. I'm sure the scouts of all the Premiership teams have already had a good sniff around and because we are an amateur club, an offer of a good wage is unlikely to be turned down. In our match programme there is always a kind of 10 questions put to a different player each week. Nearly all of them respond to the question about ambition with the desire to 'play at the highest level possible'. Can an amateur squad stay together to achieve that???

Only during the mid summer games. Their mammies wouldn't let them out to play after dark
