Boy killed in freak goalpost accident

A nine-year-old boy was killed on Sunday afternoon after the soccer goalposts he was playing around collapsed on him causing serious head injuries.

Lee Myles, from Dundalk had been waiting to see his father Damien play in a Meath and District League match between Navan Town and Woodview Celtic.

The youngster was playing along with a group of children on a playing pitch adjacent to Navan Town’s home pitch where there are portable goalposts for training purposes and a Garda spokesman confirmed that although the full nature of the accident was still unclear, it is thought the goals fell on little Lee’s head.

“Details are sketchy at present. They could have been swinging from the posts or playing about and the goalposts fell on them. The boy suffered serious head injuries. He was taken to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan where he died.”
