People should be careful what they wish for re: GUFC going down.

We go down there's no guarantee we get back up anytime soon.

    Here are the bullets WoodquayBoy!

How do you think we would hold onto players if we go down? Regardless of being in Europe or not a first division club will never be able to match the wages these guys are on. I admit that a lot are only worthy of part time status.

Has anyone thought of how expensive it would be to go into Europe? Save getting a plum fixture against a big club surely it could end up putting us in a bigger hole than we already are? How big are the payouts for getting there?

I would love to see us stay up and we shouldnt be putting all our eggs in one basket by saying sure if we get relegated wel win the cup simple as. I want us to stay up because jeff has the capabilities and the links to strenghten our squad but if we go down not the end of the world..

Better chance of Jeff fecking off to greener pastures if we do win Cup & stay up.

hasnt he just moved his family .

Didnt Jeff not just move his family over here though and wants to settle down etc??I do think hes a good manager, just lacks experience with one or 2 of his substitute decisons but obviously its his first job so experience will come.He has us playing half decent stuff too and when he trims the fat(about 10 players) we could be ok.I DESPERATLY want us to stay in the premier though.2 cup semi's and staying up will make Jeff manager of the year IMO with all hes had to put up with.

    Completely agree.

There is absolutely no guarantee that we would get anywhere near being promoted if we went down.

We would lose far too many players. True, some of our lads might not get anything better elsewhere, but would move on all the same.

We would be left with the A league team, sprinkled with a few of the current bunch and perhaps a former player or two would re-join from before we went professional.

We would be no better off than many of the clubs in the First Division. Locally based players, without the ability to attract anyone of sufficient quality into the club. Galway simply doesn't have the pool or structures in place at the moment that would facilitate Galway United being a force on a national stage, on it's own merits. There are some excellent youth structures in sprinkled around Galway city and county but they are all self-insulated from the outside world.

Players in Galway underage and junior football aren't seen as being successful unless they make the move across the water, rather than what many more would be better served doing... move up into the LOI, be it at A league level or whatever.

We were damn lucky to get out of it and I never want to see it again if I can help it.

I haveread through thread again and didn't see anyone post a wish that we would be relegated. I hope to God we stay up - and if Cork City goes ti.ts up, as looks likely, then there will probably be one less club going down.
Also, it doesn't matter what division we are in next season, we will be a part-time club so we won;t be able to match the wages of other clubs anyway

I'd like be able to say this after our UEFA Cup trip to Azerbaijan...

"Honestly lads Baku is a graveyard, i never wanna go back there. it can be notoriously difficult to escape from."

Before I'd have always chosen to stay up but it's been 17 years since we won the Cup and 17 years since European football!!

I'd nearly take losing the cup final to Bohs above survival, European and Setanta Cup football would be worth it in my view!
