What do those little green bars above everyone's avatar denote, and how are they attained?
I think it's the amount of positive (or negative) feedback you've gotten in the form of 'thanks' or, more rarely, 'reputation'.
Click on your control panel (top right) and you'll see a column called 'latest reputation received' - it will list rep and thanks.

A thank is worth one point. Clicking on the star, you can add positive or negative reputation, the value of which varies according to how highly thought of the giving poster is (I think; I haven't paid too much attention - honest! - but I know the values vary). Hover over the bars, and a description of the poster appears.
My favourite are the red bars for overall negative reputation. We've only had a couple of those so far though.

Bear in mind that a few times when the site has been upgraded or otherwise redone, all thanks and reputation went back to zero.

A few fleeting seconds of highlights because of course the competition, the text comments of Mike from Sligo, and frequent ad breaks are what the viewer really wants.
