    MNS Blog

I didnt see the show myself but read Tony O'Donoghue's blog yesterday and apparently on MNS on Monday Stephen McGuinness had a pop at Cork over them not playing players wages.

    The link is here

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/mns/f...tonyodonoghue/

and the relevant part re this topic is below:

"Stephen McGuinness, head of the Players' Union, was an excellent guest. He revealed that Cork City players were free agents because they hadn't been paid for three weeks ahead of the crucial Bohemians clash at Turner's Cross. What on earth is going on in Cork?

The fact that the wages weren't paid JUST after the transfer window closed was too much of a coincidence as far as McGuinness was concerned. If that had happened a couple of weeks earlier the players could have left the club for nothing as City were in breach of contract."

If wages haven't be paid (I heard they haven't too, but it's all rumour at this stage) then the players should refuse to play until they get their cash, simple as that really. I wouldn't continue to come into work if my bosses decided to stop paying me would I?

Worrying times for Cork though? Any Cork fans care to enlightn the rest of us as to the situation?

That's happened to me working for a cowboy printing company. Delayed cheques mean your mind isn't going to be on the job and it's a knock on effect. Not being able to pay bills etc, I fully understand the Cork players being peed off about it. Didnt think this would happen to Cork of all clubs though.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to Stephen McGuinness to be honest. The PFAI made up some lies about our players not being paid earlier in the season which ended up getting into the tabloids. They even fabricated supposed quotes about it by two of our players.

I wouldn't have much time for the PFAI but judging by the newspaper coverage and the Cork City forum all is not well on Leeside. I didn't think anything said on MNS on this matter was in any way unfair.

Just been on the Cork City forum and they paint a bleak picture, hadn't realised there was a possibility of Cork joining Dublin City and Kilkenny in the communities forum.

As an aside does anyone else think it would be the funniest thing the history of mankind if UCD were to finish 10th, but weren't relegated because Cork were demoted instead of them?

    Unhappy

We'll have to wait and see on this one-the rumour (from the not so reliable source of information that is the Evening Echo) is there's a meeting between the players, management and Arkaga in the next two days. It's not looking overly good mind you.

Hopefully it'll all be cleared up and sorted though-we've a number of players out of contract at the end of the season so it could be very bad for us if this is the case. Especially since we've left so many of our youth system leave over the past two or three years. I doubt this is going to go well however, we could be running into some money trouble.

And no-that would really not be funny Especially cause I know you'd miss the chance to go to Belfield next season!

    McGuinness said:
Cork were to be paid on a friday (they are paid every second friday) but they didn't get their money till the Following friday - so ONE week late. this puts Cork in breach, so all their players can be free agents if they so wish. he wondered if they would be getting paid on time the following friday etc

(that's all paraphrasing - NOT direct quote - watch the show yourself for the exact.

Wouldn't shock me if this VC company were to pull the "company" down. A VC company should never be put in charge of a football club. Its obvious that they have no clue how to make a club work in Ireland.

To be fair is obvious harely anyone over here has a clue how to make a club work in ireland. It woudl seem every club is having its own horror show financially.

I wonder where the Cork owners stand on the Platinum One proposals. You would think a VC company would be in favour of the supposed benefits (mainly financial) of an AIL. It may suit their agends to paint a very bleak picture about a club many here woudl see as fairly solid (good gates, good transfer fees recently, big catchment to themselves etc).
It may be an attempt to force a few hands witht he powers that be ?
