    pirates finish third in challenge

    Buccaneers Beat DRC Side

    Sunday July 06 2003

The win earns the Buccaneers R300,000 in prize-money, while their opponents walk away with R200,000.

The South African side were without their best players, who were either on national duty with Bafana Bafana in Burundi, or were being rested after a long season for the Premier Soccer League champions.

The first half was a quiet affair with not much goal action on either side. Thapelo Liau thought he had given the Buccaneers the lead on 12 minutes, but the assistant referee flagged for off-side.

Thabang Radebe in the Pirates goal was not tested until the 40th minute when he was called on to make a save from a free-kick. He fumbled badly, before his defence managed to clear the loose ball.

But it was the introduction of Phumudzo Manendzhe for Jimmy Kauleza on the hour-mark which proved the catalyst as he turned in a John Avery cross for the all-important goal.

The game was a curtain-raiser for the final between Kaizer Chiefs and TP Mazembe, the club who beat Pirates on penalties in the semifinal last weekend.

    Town unhappy with John

Longford Town manager Alan Matthews is furious with the news that while defender Avery John was still contracted to the Midlanders, he was away playing for South African side Orlando Pirates.

John is now under an investigation by FIFA and if the Trinidad and Tobago international is found guilty of playing for another club while contracted elsewhere, he may face a worldwide ban from football.

The former Bohemians defender told Matthews in July that he had to return home to visit his sick mother, while in fact it is alleged that he played for the Pirates in a Vodafone Challenge Cup game against St Eloi Lupopo on July 6.

The 27-year-old parted company with the Midlanders just before the transfer window closed, but Matthews is still unhappy that John abused his trust.

"Avery had told us that he had to return to Trinidad because his mother was sick but now it turns out he was in South Africa playing for another club. We will be investigating further," he stressed.

Not entirely sure about that - he did have some excellent games, just turned into a complete w@nker this season... However we could have been due a transfer fee, and some much needed cash....

If thats the same Avery 'elbows' John as de eL version he gonna get a severe FIFA punishment - i'd expect a ban of some sort.

I suppose ye will terminate his contract fairly soon.

if the above is true i feel we should push for a world wide ban, he deserves all he gets
Ignore Max Power, he is no more, the future is Ron Burgundy. I'd love to be Ron Burgundy but they won't let me........

The same story is in the Sun today. Dont know about a transfer fee but if it is true about him playing for Orlando Priates then the Town should sue him for breech of contract, and try to recover his wages since he played for them until he left the club.

If found guilty by FIFA he will recieve an automatic 12 month world wide ban from the game.

Very surprised to hear of that. But the deviousness of saying his mother was sick and he's thousands of miles away playing for a South African side...... obviously a mercenary and a worldwide ban sounds about right.

    Avery gone Gone

What a complete and utter ****er John is. The cokckiness of the man. May he get a long and well deserved ban from the game. If John played in the cup final for us, we would have won the thing. May he rot in hell.

Wouldn't go that far Martinho! If we get back the wages we've given him for the last six or seven weeks plus all the medical bills for the injury he picked up while playing for them then i couldn't a sh*t about him...
