With Lansdowne out of operation where would an Irish club play their home CL games if one qualified this year or next? Obviously pie in the sky but is their any venue with good enough floodlights?
Were Manchester United not playing at the same time as RTÉ were showing the home leg of Shels vs. Deportivo in the CL QR3? If they were then I think this shows that RTÉ would show the Irish team...

Well they mightn't have had the rights to the Man U qualifiers (as they're seperate from the main rights) and anyway, as gspain pointed out, they must show the local team as part of their rights package (They'd also have to provide at least 12 cameras to cover the game...)

croke park
rds maybe ?? wont happen anyway.
RDS is probably the only option, assuming Croker isn't available.
We're not arrogant, we're just better.
A lot of interest in this game in work today hopefully RTE do it some justice and give it decent coverage lets hope Shoddy isn't let near this one, Tony O'Donohue/Seanie Connor would be a good combination given his PR background Seanie is great at hyping things up.

Plenty of mention of sport in the Public Service Broadcasting Charter, which is what stops 'commercial realities' turning the station into TV3 or Channel 6. Of course, the political reality is that many in RTE will interpret promoting Irish sport as giving hours of hyped coverage to GAA.
Why isn't the domestic game huge here so? They do not act like a national broadcaster and haven't been doing so for years, yet still increase the license fee every chance they have.
Thats not what ws said by people in the FAI at the time, €5m was the price tag being given not to show MNS. Its good they are doing it ..... but kickin' and screamin' are two words i'd be using here.
But dont they argue that the Nations viewers want to see ManU at the cost of domestic games. They fight tooth and nail on this point when ever it is contested. They would show ManU over an Irish game because there is less work for them.
Exactly, "surely we can be called a sports mad country" .... just look at who is saying it ffs.
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
On a slightly off-topic note, does anyone know if tickets for the game tonight will be available outside the ground before kick-off?

Simply, Democracy dictates. RTE show what the majority of people in Ireland want to see, if they didnt, they wouldn't bring in any revenue and would be shut down a long time ago. Unfortunately for the EL, the majority of people in this country want to see cross-channel soccer as oppossed to Irish soccer.
DCFC_Steve simply pointed out that from a commercial point of view, and not a "we-hate-the-EL-thats-why-we-dont-show-games" point of view, rte shows what the people want to see.

Are there many countries where a broadcaster can be both commercial and also demand a licence fee?
