It was Bord Gais's sponsorship which started my solvent abuse problem.

Its not really that it will cause problems like alcohol abuse, living in Ireland will do that anyway but when you go into schools to sell the league, I dont think the parents or the teachers would be too happy with you going in selling the Smirnoff League or the Budweiser league.

It'd just be another excuse to add to the list - didn't stop them allowing the GAA in when hurling's main sponsor was Guinness, but you can bet it'd be another reason for the boards of management of many biggotted schools to block football.

No one calls the Hurling Championship 'The Guinnes Championship' though, whereas a very large proportion of LOI fans call the league the Eircom league.

I'd much prefer if the sponsors weren't an alcohol company.

Saying that City are sponsored by Beamish, but the logo isnt on the Kids jerseys.

It depends how it's marketed really.

I agree maybe we should go with a drinks company, if marketed correctly we could claim we are combating the binge drinking culture that exists in this country by exposing our kids to alcohol younger. It is just a thought at this stage but maybe the FAI and drinks companies and schools could maybe look into. In France kids often drink wine with a meal before they are 16 ! wish i was French when i was 16

So that Pats can change their nickname to the 'Kiss Of Death'?

Thinking of renaming this thread - "LOI supporters over react again".

It is obvious that eircom would assess their sponsorship as time for renewal comes around. It is also obvious that the FAI will test the waters for potential replacements & this won't be don't in public glare. Even if eircom decide not to renew this is not automatically a black mark against the league.

Up on RTE now, although the FAI just released a statement that "We are currently in discussions with eircom on all aspects of sponsorship. The talks are at an advanced stage and we won’t be commenting any further until they have concluded"

Does anybody think that trying to get a community spirit like the gaa and have a club representing each county might be the only way?

Definitely. Team names like Kildare County or Dublin City will see millions flock to our league.

On Six One now that they want to pull out of the league only. Sligo's chairman interviewed about it.

Must be something in it anyway.

On 6.1 now - Tony O'Donoghue presenting as unmitigated bad news and linking it with the precarious position at Sligo Rovers......

[edit] Should have known Stu would beat me...

Oh, and its to be followed by a report on vicious racist abuse against a 14 yo by the followers of our fine national games

Standard drivel anyway. Sligo are top half yet somehow have come out saying they'll go out of business next month, without any sort of mention that the idiots running the club may be someway responsible. Also no mention that maybe another sponsor may come along, like happened every other time a sponsor pulled out.

Does anyone know exactly what the eircom deal is worth to the league (and the individual clubs, more importantly)?
