What really piddles me off is how the Herring and RTE (I haven't seen how it's been treated by anyone else) can jump all over what they perceive (rightly or wrongly) to be another "Crisis" story about the league. When was the last time they paid anything like the same amount of attention to the actual football going on in this country. I don't think the league has made the back page of the Herring since the registration "crisis" in 2002. I've no objection to the media reporting bad news stories, but I do object when it's the only thing they're interested in.

RT� Sport has learned that eircom will end their sponsorship of the Irish domestic league at the end of the current season.

The telecommunications group began their relationship with soccer in this country in 2000, sponsoring the national side before extending their commitment by becoming title sponsor of the league shortly afterwards.

Both deals are due to expire this year with the company expected to maintain their relationship with the international side but end that with the domestic game.

The news will come as a further blow to the League of Ireland which has seen many clubs forced to make cut backs already this campaign.

The FAI refused to confirm or deny the news but said in a statement: 'We are currently in discussions with eircom on all aspects of sponsorship. The talks are at an advanced stage and we won't be commenting any further until they have concluded.'

How the f%%k can they come up with the headline and paragraphs 1 , 3 and 4 without taking into account the last bit they wrote.

Paragraph one means a source -or sources- who doesn't want to be named, but who Tony O'D or whoever would trust to know what they're talking about, told them this.

The last bit means that the FAI refused to confirm or deny it. There's no contradiction. I'm pretty sure RTE wouldn't have run with it if they didn't believe it to be true.

As no sources are given should the headline not of included the terms Expected or Rumoured .

I can't understand the hysteris they will be a raft of bookies interested in the sponsorhip.

What a load of baloney. Any club that is still budgeting on the way things were when we had winter football deserves to go belly up. We have had summer football for years so they have had plenty of time to re-design their budget.

I think there will be far more than bookies interested. I think 1.2m is a steal considering the exposure the company would get.

To make out that this is a crisis is off the wall and clearly grasping at straws for a story, yet so many people fall for it.

Magicme, to be fair RM hasn't a clue to be honest. He is pulling random points out of anywhere to try and support his angle, and fails to even mention any of the measures put in place in the last few years.

Attendances here but we all know these are just estimates & like the figures recorded on foot.ie they include more official numbers are time went so recent numbers more accurate.

Eircom way very well pull out but the reporting by RTE in particular has been irresponsible. I think we underestimate the affect of negative publicity as I get "eircom league in crisis" comments when I come into work from people who are little interest in the league. Bad news clearly sells as on RTE website this story is in top 5 sports articles when LOI rarely attracts that attention.

A Face i agree with you and Magicme that the crowds were bigger for winter football than summer football. No need to say i don't have a clue as we are one on this subject.

Look this is very simple Our national broadcaster carried a stroy about The league yesterday it seems like some people on here go bizerk if the league gets a bad news day although we have been on a bad run of it of late granted.

I think the national broadcaster has some sources some of you may not have believe it or not ! Excuse the majority of the people if they believe them instead on a couple of guys on the internet.
