    US Visa's

    Lads/lasses

Quick query, got my last passport in 06 do i need a visa to get to the states.

Didnt need a visa in 05 the last time I went but I thought there was a 2 year extension on the Visa waiver requirement for non biometric passports which has now ran out. US Dept calls for 'machine readable' passports excempt from visa's. I recall a photo op with Dermot Ahern on the first 'new' Irish passport after I got mine. Do I need a visa ? my photo is digital

Would my sister need one ? her passport expires in 2012 and there is an actual photograph in her passport

Neither of you need visas. As long as its machine readable you're fine

the Machine readable bit goes like this

    P>>IRL>>>>Dodge>>>>081100>>>>>>>>>>

    etc

What Dodge said. I think you might have to fill out a visa waiver on the internet a couple of days before the flight, but I'm not sure whether or not that's come in yet.

Yep. They're taking it online and making it happen a little earlier, so they can check you out before you even step on the plane. Kind of makes sense.

    Newryrep,

It's fair to ask other people's experiences of visa applications or border and custom controls but, an Immigration Officer will tell you each case is different.
Visa rules in may places (incl. the U.S.A.) change regularly, like all the time. The one rule is contact the the crowd that issue the documents/Visa if you are in doubt.

The Non-Immigarnt visa page from US Embassy, Dublin.
    http://dublin.usembassy.gov/non-immigrant_visas.html

    "Contact details:
    General Visa Inquiries
    Call the Visa Information Service Monday - Friday between 8:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Case specific inquiries (applications already submitted): Call +353-1-668-8777: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

We regret that we cannot reply to visa inquiries by e-mail. Please fax your inquiry to our Visa Information Unit at (01) 668-8881. Please include a return fax number and we will respond to you as quickly as possible."

If you are a resident of Northern Ireland, U.S. Consulate, Belfast

There is a cut-off date for Machine-Readable and Chip Passports in October 2006.
    http://dublin.usembassy.gov/mrpassports.html
    "...Machine-readable passports issued before 10/26/05
    – no further requirements.
Machine-readable passports issued between 10/26/05 and 10/25/06 – requires a digital photograph printed on the data page or integrated chip with information from the data page. A digital photo is one that is printed on the page, not a photo that is glued or laminated into the passport.
Machine-readable passports issued on or after 10/26/06 – requires integrated chip with information from the data page (e-passport). Visit the DHS website for more information "
