Post Irish Soccer Referees Society - Press Release 30/08/03

The Irish Soccer Referees Society are pleased to announce the launch of their new web site irishreferees.com.

The site was launched in the Lynch Green Isle Hotel, Dublin, on Saturday the 30th of August 2003 by Society President Mr. Joe O Brien.

The ISRS hope that the website will enhance the image of refereeing in this country, provide a means of showcasing what refereeing has to offer for potential new recruits and act as an information resource for current referees.

Very good Ref, nice to see the site finally out there.

EDIT: Ah, I didn't notice that you asked for comments, I was going to PM you. Sorry for not responding the last time you asked. Anyway, I think I mentioned to you before that my main concern about the site was the fact that the regular text and link colours are the same in the content section, and of course the links have no underline. I find this very frustrating as you have to actively look for the links and to be honest I think many people just won't bother. It's a bit of a no-no on the usability front.

That's the major thing and I really think you should address that. There are a few other small things too, though they're not nearly as important:

    - The logos at the top are very noisy, as if they were resized at 256 colours. I realise that it's difficult finding originals of good quality but if you do actually have some, feel free to send them on and I'll see if I can get rid of some of that noise.

    - The tabs are a bit small from the usability POV. They're legible at 1280x1024 but I wouldn't like to have bad sight looking at them and I wouldn't like to view the site at a higher res. This applies to the fonts site-wide too, unfortunately. Personally, I wouldn't go below 10pt on any site these days except for context information and special circumstances.

    - I'd put a line break before and after the navigation in the footer and make it a more prominent colour, but that's more of a personal thing.

As I've said in the past, I'm not being critical, I hope this is taken as constructive criticism. Well done.

looks good and about time too, about 2 weeks ago i sent an e-mail to the fai complaining about the set up for coaching and refeering courses, and that they should be held more often and all over the country, I got a very sattisfactory reply from packie bonner, and i might add i sent the same e-mail to 3 other people and he was the only one that replied.

Maybe you should get more bandwidth!

The daily bandwidth limit for this customer has been exceeded. Try again after midnight, EST.

Like the site but I think you should have the ability to get back to the home page. If you surf through it you cannot get back to the start! Put a home button on the top of the page or top right where the menu is located. I clicked on the stories on the home page and was left without the ability to click to get back there.

If you have problems with bandwidth, why not move the site to a server like Powweb. They charge about $7 per month with plenty of bandwidth(45GB). Also 250 email addresses are available and it's all controlled by yourself from the web!

    Try www.powweb.com

on the top left of every page there is a link to the home page.

    just click on 'ISRS'.

i thought it was obvious but then i put them there.

it never dawned on me when i was putting the site together that people wouldn't realise links were links.

too much work to change all of them now.

Should have mentioned Ref: You use an embedded stylesheet in your pages. If you use an external stylesheet you'll be able to change your style definitions across the site just by edting one file.

I stand corrected but I thought that the standard in web design was "Home". I thought ISRS was just a tab for style!

Anyway, all that aside it's an excellent site and I was just adding my comments following my visit!

    Well done.

Pity there isn't a forum on the site so people could offer advice to the referees on the NL panel...
