7 Subs in Premier League: Good News for Irish?

From next season, premier league clubs will be allowed to have seven subs on the bench. I know that this was put in place to suit clubs who have many highly paid players not getting a game but as the season goes on this should have an effect on Irish players who are on the fringes on the 1st team who may be given more game time. Hopefully it will work to the advantage of several players such as:
1) o' Halloran and Lowrey of Aston Villa.
2) Nolan, Judge and Treacy at Blackburn.
3) Matthew Cassidy of Bolton
4) Darron Gibson of Man Utd
5) Marc Wilson of Porstmouth
6) David Hutton at Spurs.

There are 7 subs allowed in the SPL, and I think all it did for Darren O'Dea was to make him the most unused Irish substitute this season.

One thing it will do is reduce John O'Sheas appearances as managers wont have to pick a jack of all trades on the bench but can go for specialists in each position.

being genuine here but you could stick mcshane on that list

Genuinely not stirring, but I couldn't see Darron Gibson getting on MU's bench if it had 17 places on it! Plus I don't see Hutton getting near Spurs bench this season, even with the extra two places.

In any case, it's game time which counts in developing a player and if a youngster isn't good enough to fill places 12 to 16, then I don't see how being 17th or 18th will get you many appearances, barring highly unusual circumstances. After all, the present situation allows a keeper and four others - usually a defender, two midfielders and a striker. Therefore, whatever position the two new subs play, they've got to get past the rest of the bench before they can think of replacing someone in the starting XI.

I can see why Managers would want it - costs them nothing - but imo, a young player who is on the fringe of Premier football would gain more from regular football at e.g. a decent Championship club, than 10-15 minutes every three or four weeks in the Prem. Which is why, e.g. Ferguson loaned Jonny Evans first to Belgium, then to Sunderland when in the Championship, and again when in the Prem. Ditto Gibson (to Belgium, then Wolves).

In the end, it's looking like Evans will prove good enough to be a regular in a decent Prem team, but not quite Top Four. Gibson might be in the same category, though he hasn't progressed quite so quickly recently as Evans.
Either way, warming a bench at OT won't do anything for them.

Yeah - John O'Shea has remained in a permanent stasis of arrested development due to extended bouts of bench warming and not commanding a specific position.

Wont make any real difference until they increase the amount of subs you can bring on.
