    O'Callaghan to leave Cork City

    From CCFC website:

"It is with regret that George O’Callaghan has informed Cork City FC Manager Alan Mathews that he wishes to leave the club.
Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, the City manager said: “We have been approached by a number of clubs enquiring about George’s availability and the player has a number of options available to him. At this point in his career, George feels that it would be in his best interests, both personally and professionally, to pursue his career outside of the eircom League of Ireland, and we fully respect George’s decision in this matter.”

He really does think he's Ronaldo doesn't he??? The size of his ego is unbelievable, an average player who pimps himself around like a premiership player!.................although Joey4Ireland informs me that he's getting abuse off City fans for leaving in the 1st place so obviously he felt he had to go................surely he can take a bit of stick though???

He's a fücking class A idiot. Undoubtedly has quality but not an ounce of intelligence to say either (a) I've got to immerse himself in his career enough to not think about the camera's or (b) understand that his ego is so inordinately huge that the only way he can control it is by immersing himself in his career.

Either way the chaps EGO must be some demon to tame. Pity but he'll be back here in a years time bitching about some poor manager or another who just didn't understand him.

He has never been slow to talk to the media in the past so I am sure we will find out why he wants to leave sooner or later. I suspect the whole truth (can only guess what that is) may not come out until after he leaves. Seems to be a surprise to almost everyone as no rumours before today.

He is not half the player he was when he left the last time so won't have anything like the same impact. Hopefully the freed up wages can be used to convince Joe Gamble to stay.

Overall very disappointing that less than 6 months into 3 year contract he wants to leave.

I'm surprised that you're surprised. Up at the UCD game the other night one of your fellow exiles mentioned to me that George might be off to Tranmere!

Good news for Cork City I think. I like Georgie, he's a bit of a character, and they are lacking in the EL, and he's a very talented individual when he puts his mind to it, but Cork will cope without him, and no doubt reap a near six figure sum if not more for him. Can't argue with that. I reckon they should sell Gamble too, while theres a chance of getting big money for him. No player is irreplaceable...money on the other hand....

He was booed by one section of fans during the Bray game just in case he or his sycophants had forgotten the disgraceful manner in which he left previously.
That was one game, I haven't heard any particular George specific abuse at City games since.

By usual standards we would have had 3-4 weeks of rumour & counter rumour.

Exiles have more important things to discuss like envelopes.

I wonder did it have anything to do with him not getting games recently? Hardly i'd say, Was he contacted by Tranmere before the window, obviously the club would have known about this.

It will free up some wages and sadly he wasn't all that hot this time around. I just cant help thinking its poor form to be honest as he is only here a few months into a three year contract.

found in an Australian backpacker magazine...which interestingly also has the eircom league table, albeit a series behind but it does have it.

"Curious George’s organtang delusional cousin George O'Callaghan is to leave Cork City again.
The egotistical 28-year-old midfielder has informed manager Alan Mathews that he wishes to leave again only a year after failing miserably with Ipswich Town and is believed to be whoring his services to the mighty Tranmere Rovers and unstoppable Oldham Athletic.
City say they have had a number of offers for his services to wash cars, sweep the roads and a stint at a local comedy club as he continues to prove himself a joke of a footballer."

Mixed feelings about this latest news about Georgie. I agree that his game was not as good as his best days with the club before the fall out with Rico, but he was in a class above many of the others in the squad at that time. Now, the set up is so different. We have a stronger squad and his talent is not so crucial to us any more, IMHO.

Reports saying he was released by Cork? Did he have a clause in his contract saying he could leave if an English side came in for him?
